www.paypal.com good for webdesigners
make a pay pal acount and get your email, address, and bank account verified then you can sell your websites through "Paypal Buy Now buttons"
Pretty good way to accept credit/debit card transactions for cheap webdesigns, (or expensive )

Be very careful - PayPal isn't a bank, and isn't bound by normal banking regulations.
There's nothing stopping them from seizing your funds if, for example, someone pays you with a stolen PayPal account.

Wow, some of those stories on that site are really disturbing. Has anyone on here actually had a problem with pay pal when they only accept payments from web/flash design clients? How do most firms accept payment for designs?

There are risks to Paypal but they are regulated by american law. If someone pays you from a stolen account ... you will almost certainly lose the money as they will claw it back ... these are the risks (and costs) of doing business.
However if you have shipped the product... (receipt, shipping papers etc...) you can declare it as a loss (part of the cost of doing business) on your taxes. This comes off of your Pre-TAX income ... You lose the money for the product but you can include the expense of aquiring it in the first place PLUS your warehousing and handling charges ... nes pas ... you lose nothing but your time which better be in the handling charges.
As for seizing your account funds ... well if your major sales are porn or worse ... this could easily happen... but if you are a legitimate business this is unlikely to happen. If it does and you cannot resolve it on the phone while you are recording the conversation (you must inform them you are doing this for it to be totally legal in court) if it fails then look for a real Lawyer ... Check for Lawyers who specialize in serving papers on Paypal. As soon as you have legitimate legal representation they will wilt away before your eyes and reactivate your account. They MAY even pay your legal costs (but you would have to sign a non-disclosure agreement) thus this conversation is theoretical.
Theoretically, for the record I am not nor have ever been a Paypal vendor.

My girlfriend did - accepted a payment, went to transfer it to her checking account, found her account locked (including funds that had been in the account prior to the questionable payment), and had to spend three weeks in back-and-forth I.D. verification nonsense to get access to her account (never did get that money, though).

Hmmm... I have used paypal successfully to invoice clients and have had absolutely no problem.
I don't consider it a gamble at all, although I was nervous when I first started using it... Once I found it all to be very smooth, I have been loving it!

The only time you have to worry about using paypal is in the same cases where you have to worry about using any other form of payment, i.e. When you don't know who you're dealing with.
So long as you are dealing with a legitimate client who has a verifiable brick-and-mortar business then you can be comfortable using an online payment gateway.
If you are dealing with an anonymous ebay auction winner that is a different story...
Not only can paypal accounts be stolen but also payment thru any service with a stolen credit card can result in a chargeback.
Also there are cases of physical payments (checks, money orders, certified checks, etc.) turning out to be counterfeit.
Bottmline is do you homework and know who you are doing business with.

paypal
when i first started using paypal i began by keeping no more in the account as was absolutely necesary... when i got paid, i withdrawed it via a bank account as soon as possible...
i have now been using paypal for all online transactions for over 4 years... i have never had a problem... i accept small payments of $10 to $20 and i have also recieved a payment of £2000 via paypal...
i admit there are risks .. but i think paypal makes up for those risks in its flexibility and easy to use system....
as i think somebody has already said in this thread...
know who you are dealing with...
in this day and age with internet technology advancing as quick as it is... can you really trust anybody... i myself have been stung several times from what most people would call "reputable companies"
... its not just paypal...
paypal only gets a bad wrap because people only hear of the bad things that happen...
for me the best thing about paypal is that it protects your credit card... if you want to buy something for $20 put $20 in your paypal account and use that..
also as far as i know.. they cant chargeback to a paypal account that is empty...
just my two penneth... i dont often post but im sick of paypal getting bad press... what about all the good things they have done... nobody talks about those
