I received this email yesterday, so I figured I would do my part and post it here....

This is important for all of us!!!

Brazilian congress is now voting on a project that will reduce the amazon
forest to 50% of its size. The area to be deforested is 4 times the size of
Portugal and would be mainly used for agriculture and pastures for live
stock... All the wood is to be sold to international markets in the form of
wood chips, by multinational companies... The truth is that the soil in the
amazon forest is useless without the forest itself. Its quality is very
acidic and the region is prone to constant floods. At this time more than
160.000 square kilometers deforested with the same purpose, are abandoned
and in the process of becoming deserts.

We cannot let this happen. Copy the text into a new email, put your
complete name in the list below, and send to everyone you know. (Don't
just forward it, because then it will end up with rows of >>>'s ) If you
are the 100th person to sign please send a copy to fsaviolo@openlink.com.br

    Thank you.

"All that is necessary for the triumph of evil, is that good people do
    nothing " Edmund Burke

change the world. Indeed it is the only thing that ever has" Margaret Mead

Ceci est important pour nous tous ! ! !

    Merci

    Hey, everybody.
I just wanted to let you all know that this e-mail is erroneous. NOT the fact that there was legislation being voted on in Brazil about deforestation. That part is true. The problem with the e-mail is that it's late.

Through the support of global environmental agencies and other petition lists such as this one, the bill was shelved by the Brazillian congress in May. You can read more about that here:
    http://forests.org/recent/2000/histvica.htm

So, this e-mail runs the risk of becoming another junk e-mail/urban legend that I think we don't need. In fact, that's the reason I started poking around about this one was that I received another such petition list that turned out to be completely false.
Let me step up on my soapbox for a moment and give you the places I check for anything which might be an urban legend:
    http://www.urbanlegends.com
    http://urbanlegends.about.com

There are entirely too many of these false, misleading, or misdirected e-mails going around, so check out these sites before you send something on that might just add to the glut.

Ok, I'll step back off my soapbox now.

In defense of this e-mail, the people that started it haven't come forth denouncing it, so they may in fact want it to continue and gather further support. So, judge for yourselves.

I don't want to sound pushy or like I'm talking down to you in any way. I just wanted to make you all aware of some of the resources and info that I've been looking for to debunk these false claims that seem to continually come my way.

    thanks,
    Rich Paul
