    Free weight lifting

I'm starting to lift recently, I'm only using free weights. I'm not so worried about trying to lift too much too soon, I'm smart enough to avoid injury that way.

what I'm more worried about is incorrect form. How do I know the right way to lift the weights? If I'm doing it incorrectly, how much can it effect me?

Also, on a side note, any good tips on routines?

Feel free to share anything about exercising and working out in this thread.

I think the main thing is just to not try and lift too much and certainly not without a spotter for some exercizes. You also want to bring the weights down slowly after pushing or pulling them. Don't just lift and then let them swing back down fast. If that happens, it's probably too much weight for you. Use slow, controlled motions.

Also, you probably already know this, but do similar groups on the same day (ie. chest/tri's,back/biceps, etc.).

the position of your hands on the bar and the position of your back are importnt but it's more important to breath out when you lift and inhale as you let it down. as for sets and reps it depends on how you are right now. I use the body for life routine which is a little different from traditional lifting ideas. you can check it out on google..

    Makes sense.

The machines are normally pretty full at my school (which is where I work out if I can't get a hold of my cousin's) and so most machines are normally taken.

Any tips for using dumbbells? Have some here at home.

And don't forget to think about philosophy or other things that need intense brain work ... whatever that is. Scientists have found out that if you do that during sport, you can get an IQ 27% higher within a year. No joke.

The brain can transport more blood and has more blood in it. Because of that it can process informations much better. Even the neurons get more and stronger and the connection between the two brain halfs get more and better as well.

Pretty interesting. Wish I could read more than German I.

The reason I'm doing all of this is because of the Lacrosse team. I'm thinking about joining. So I also need some good ideas for leg exercise routines.

Same as machines but use even less weight and use even slower motions. Dumbbell exercizes help develop the joints/tendons as well as the large muscle area. So a lot of that is just maintaining consistent tension rather than exerting the most power. I would think that would be a good way to train for Lacrosse. That and a boat-load of running.

Best way to build muscles on free weights...
    Do 10 reps per set.

    To select the correct weight:
during 1st set @ 7 reps you feel the pain
during 2nd set @ 4 reps you feel the pain

Do workout for other part of body (eg-sit ups) then do it over again.

When you find at 8 or 9 reps on the first set you feel the pain, up the weight.
