Letting you all know - iPods are going to die! (evil laugh)

Hey everyone, just wanted to let you know that following up from my post about iPod killers, i purchased the Sony nw-hd3....

Very nice piece of kit! Anyone who realises how poor the iPod is should get one of these stylish beasts

    Spec

    20 gig HDD
30 hours battery life (atrac3) or
    22 hours battery life (mp3)
    adjustable sound equalisers
    stylish colours

    Worth a look at least!

different compression/algorithm, perhaps means more math for the CPU, thus more power is used, and less battery time.

the same way that OGG Vorbis for the iPod would put more stress on the CPU, thus shortening it's battery time due to how it's compressed.

willing to bet that they've streamlined the hardware for their ATRAC3 compression, but not for mp3.

hate to sound like subway... but I'll not buy another mp3 player until Sony comes out with one that's made with the Cell processor.

otherwise, it's iPod until it dies.

iPod still kills it in userability as well as looking kick ass. Also, i have a hard time buying sony products anymore because they usually lead to you needing to buy more sony products (over priced ones)

Hmm, what is Subby going to do now? He is going to be torn between Sony, his maker and Apple, his god

Will there be mp3 players with cel processors? How powerfull will they be? And wont they eat batteries raw?

lol @ all the cell talk in here.

Cell was designed to scale from cell phones to supercomputers, so I think it would be possible to use them in MP3 players as well. However, till now cell is officialy announced for:

    Sony: PS3 & Workstations
    Toshiba: TV's
IBM: nothing official, but most likely they will use it in supercomputers.

I think the biggest problem will be that they "only" have four fabs right now to produce cell chips, so they can't use it in all their products or they would have huge shortages everywhere.

    Ok, enough cell talk.

I would still take the iPod because of iTunes.

SonicStage (Sony's version of iTunes is pretty bad) however, iTunes i quite a bloated piece of kit.
There's a software company who made the popular software for other mp3 players, who is thinking of supporting the NW-HD3.

One problem for me; Its made by Sony.

Which for me, means poor build, pain in the arse support and it'll last 5 minutes.

But I agree, it looks nice

Good luck with your new toy.

    Your wait is over.

Never had a problem with Sonys build quality. For example I still have a day one PS2 (like a few of my friends) and it still works like five years ago. My DSC-T1 digicam has a screen that I was not able to get scratches on it and I have the cam with me most of the time without any protections. My two Sony TFT's work perfectly as well, so yeah, no reason for me to have a problem with Sonys build quality. Of course if you sell over 80 million PS2, then you will have more people with defects than if you only sell say 10 million, that's just natural and of course you only hear from those that have defects.

Nice toy, very Sony like. I have never had any problems with Sony products either, very good quaility. However, I find their software about as bad as RealOne or the old HP software for printers. Bloated, compliacted, pointless and a waste of space. iTunes is too good to miss, plus I've got over 200 songs in AAC.

But still, have fun, looks pretty good.

G-Sensor technology monitors and calculates the gravitational velocity of NW-HD3 in its three dimensions (height, width and depth); the sensor device clears the recording head away from the hard disc when the unit receives physical impact during operation.
So, I'm to understand that the recording head is always touching the hard disc surface, or they're advance planning on people dropping the thing on the floor while they're recording stuff?

It looks good though, better than most. Though still not quite as nice as the iPod.

The only way it would kill the iPod is if Sony had the Apple logo on it.

    Oh Dear....

GShock shuts the hard drive down before impact. Like the Dell Thinkpads. Great feature.

I also like the ability to turn off the internal battery to stop power leakage.

Build is great like all my other sony products. Feels so much more solid than my crummy 3gen iPod that busted a year after i bought it.... poor build quality anyone?

Well that's what you would think, but it doesn't say that.

In fact, it's such a great feature, the first mention of it is buried in the same paragraph that covers the various colors you can choose from.

Sorry, I have about 900 AAC files, and about 200 Protected AAC files

I've got a 3rd gen iPod, nearly a year old. Still good battery life, headphones still in good shape, remote still works.
