Is it poss to stream video with Flash, without using Flash Comm Server? Possible on Unix platform?
I am looking for an alternative to Flash Communication Server to so that I can stream a video clip (around 50secs).
However, is it totally neccessary to use Flash Communication Server?
We have plenty of UNIX based hosting and would prefer to keep it based on this platform, and avoid extra set up costs for the Flash Comm Software.
Is there an alternative to streaming over HTTP? If so can you give some advice or guidence for more information.
Thanks

You can't stream on HTTP, but you are supposed to be able to do a "Progressive download." I am trying that format, but I haven't gotten it to work yet.

I am using flv's linked to a component I purchased from http://www.proxus.com/components/FLV_Player.php in an swf over a normal http connection.
If you would like to visit my site www.webcastweddings.co.uk/index.htm (it is still u/c so ignore home page and general unfinished look!) go to ‘Members Area’ and login follow ‘video clips’ and you have 3 formats to choose from, flash has 8 clips as I have now decided to go that route, the other 2 formats have a clip on ‘preperation’ and ‘receiving line’. The flv component is set to 25 buffer and takes about 30 sec to play, the clips are 1 min. average and about 5mb.
Hope this is of use.

yes
I think that Unix or Microsoft platform doesn't matter in FLV video playing.
FCS was developed expecially to support a lot of simultaneuos audio & video chat: it is very good also for streaming flv videos on swf files but it is not necessary.
Use instead a good http server with high troughput (tipically 1Mbps or more)to get the same video quality.
Start your video with a five seconds pause to avoid freezing the video when it starts streaming.
Use flat background and a steady tripod.
Squeeze your video at 512Kbps or less.
Use n http server (on different hosts) to allow 2n simultanuos users to see the video.
Thats all.
