I'm more used to trying to do a pro website and having the client turn it into amateurish crap.

I remember looking at the website of a rival company with my client, and it showed a picture of the other company's ambulance. So since they had pictures of their ambulance, my client said he wanted pictures of ambulances too. So I said "Ok let's take a look at that ambulance of yours".

The guy just stared at me and said "I don't have an ambulance. Go take some pictures of any ambulance and photoshop my logo onto it".

I have to look at websites all the time as I'm the 'Web guy' in my company. The companies I deal with are all local, so i'm actually using this to my advantage and making these my leads for my side business of designing sites(it's just starting, so I don't know where this will go).

I've already got their phone, address and many times I already know them personally...so i just lay it on the line (after work of course) "Bill, i've seen your website, and I honestly think it could be better. We should sit down sometime and talk about new possibilities to drive more traffic...blah, blah blah" it's starting to work like a charm!

Sure. But here's the thing, Some products will not benefit from having a "nicer looking" website. And the ones that do, What do you say to them? -- "You're site sux, could I re-do it?" LOL!

I often zip off a few E-mails to people I can find in the company explaining to them that I was on there site and, although there site really impressed me, I noticed a few issues that concerned me. Yada yada yada and I get about 8% positive response. Try it, it works........but be professional.

yes. a potential client and I have to do a write up on what's wrong with the site. The boss knowing what I am like, made it clear to me to make the report nice and sincere and "don't be too mean".

it really is bad -- think of eye-damaging flash animations in the middle of the screen

I'm seriously about to write this one company about the fact that their site isn't exactly user friendly in either language - English or Japanese.

Every day, or just about. Heck I even do it to sites I've actually designed.

Man, I don't care what it looks like. If they got something I want, I whip out my credit card and buy it.

I prefer those garbage designs. Easier to find what I want, and you see right away if it's there or not. Designs like the Amazon site or Yahoo, or others like that are like being an ant in a maze. I can never find anything without a carful search, and sometimes not even then. And the older I get, the harder it is, even with both pairs of glasses on.

    me too fella.

For a recent job, I got asked to make the mockup in a big hurry. I wasn't given any logo artwork so had to just make something similar. Not exact but it would do for now.

All the way through this project I've been saying "er, we still need to replace that logo, its not right". I must have mentioned it 10 times but it never got done, even though my role (flash/audio only) didn't require it I made a nice new logo using the exact fonts etc, all they had to do was upload it.

    Think it got done?!

everytime i look at the site it bugs me

Seeing someone wearing one of those shirts would inspire my fist to a beatdown.

Tell me this doesn't read as "Please, punch me in the face as hard as you can until the damage can't be fixed."
