Stupid maths problem!
I'm doing some work for an eshop.
I have a price say £2.80.
That is a price with VAT 17.5%.
So to get the price without VAT you do 2.80 - 17.5%
That gives you 2.31.
Wonderful.
Now do 2.31 + 17.5%
That gives you 2.71!
How the hell does that work?!?!

17.5% of 2.31 is less than 17.5% of 2.80???

let x = the original price (without VAT)
x * 1.175 = 2.80
therefore 2.80/1.175 = x
x=2.38 (approx)

How the hell did you manage to code iDB without knowing how to handle percentages?

Sorry... should have worded the question better...
Basically, I have a load of prices with Vat.
I need to take the Vat off, so they can go online, then the online system can add the vat back on at the point of purchase.
Whats the easiest way of doing this so that the price - Vat is the same as the original price I've been given plus Vat?
Did you even play iDB4.com?

to take off VAT, divide by 1.175

its cool i slept through most of everyclass, cept P.e and lunch and history. lunch i got to eat. p.e. i got to peg nerds with balls and play floor hockey, and history i got to learn about how people killed other people!
math just seems so borng compared to that.

It's funny that all the people who did that to me while I was in school are still working at some discount mega-mart, bickering over video games, where to get their next bag, and generally not amounting to anything. Funnier than that is that I can now bench press most of them.
