eraser + other tools not working

when ever i try to erase something it starts to but once i let go of the mouse button it doesnt stick it goes back to the way it was, it does this with other tools as well, whats wrong?

maybe the layer that you try to erase is locked?

Maybe you're not in the same frame as the thing you're trying to erase, or you're trying to erase a graphic/movieclip/button. Try right-clicking what you want to erase and select 'break apart' first, then try.
