I've read a few articles on chromatic aberration in the past but never fully understood the concept.

In the simplest explanation; lenses work by bending any light that does not hit them at right angles to the surface, this is how they focus an image to a smaller area (sensor or film). Different colours bend different amounts causing some to not be as in focus and/or be in focus but shifted on the sensor or film. This causes slight errors where there are changes in colour - like colour "leaking" across.
Got no idea why it's often purple though - possibly something to do with it being close to blue? Blue light bends a lot compared to other colours.

ctanter, if you were referring to the purple line on the first photo, it's not chromatic aberration, it's a twig that was in front of the squirrel.

skate - nono. Around the edges of the berries there is a faint purple edging that is fairly classic of C.A., maybe its just me though... I shouldnt have mentioned it lol, as i said its hardly noticeable (if there at all)

Ahhh, ok. I see it now. I'm glad you brought it up, now I know what CA looks like.
