A random quandery.
1/3 of 100 is 33.3 recuring.
33.3 recuring = 99.9 recuring, not 100.
whys that?

Are you serious? Because 1/3 of 100 is not 33.33 it's 33.333333...(infinite)

That's what recuring means, we say that to mean the number goes on forever.

Haha, ok. Guess I should not ignore the words I don't know in a case like this.

I am using the one built into Windows XP.
if I simply take 33.33333333333333333333333333333 (the most 3s I can fit) and multiply by 3 i get 99.99999999999999999999999999999

in the real world, 100 divided by 3 gives you 33.3, 33.3, and 33.4.
that's just the way we roll...

OK. Let me try to explain this:
99.9 recuring is 100 because 100 minus an infinite small number is sill 100
Why? Because an infinite small number is 0 and not 0.0... recuring ...01 as this number dosen't exist.
Got it?

no it doesn't.

Skill_Unabletospell_guy
but surely their has to be an infinately small gap between 33.3 recuring x3 and 100?
no matter how many desimal places you put on 99.9recuring its still smaller than 100 or am i missunderstanding the consept of infinity?

Yea, I think the key is infinitely small.
So windows XP calculator understands infinitely small numbers?
How about the Mac subby?
-
Skill_Unabletospell_guy
ahh so infinately small actually = 0 period. i get it

Yes.
Same reason why infinite -1 is still infinite.
Or why infinite multiplied with infinite is still infinite.

no, but you're missunderstanding the concept of usefullness.
again, in the real world, we call 99.999999~ 100.
budgets don't get balanced and sales don't get made if we worry about this stuff.
