    optimizing images

hi.. im duayne.. im just new to flash..

im rebuilding my site and this time im thinking of putting a flash intro..

ive done a short intro, with images that i made with Photoshop.

my problem is, in what format should i save my images so that they would not be distorted?

i know it not about flash , but its somewhat similar.

i have this image of a ring rotating around a center ball.. i made the ring a transparent background .gif. but when i imported it to flash, i found out that the edges of the images are rough..

what should i do to keep my images in good quality? thanks..

I wouldn't know for sure, because I don't have Photoshop, but I would say that a hi-res jpg might work better. I pretty sure jpg's are a smaller than gif's and if they are saved at a high enough quality, they look pretty good. I'm not sure about the rotation thing though...

Anyone else with a second opinion?

if you are using adobe CS2,
    save as>
jpeg options comes up; put to large file>
put format on progressive and 5 scans

Save it as an EPS file and import that into flash.

    hi duayne,

in PS with your image open .. press ctr+alt+shift and s (save for web) as a jpeg. u will have to figure out what image qualy fits best for your needs.. if you need the image to be without edges, then just work with masks .. how many pics will be needed for you animation???

oh i see... ill try your advice too... thanks... :P

so you all suggest that i must save my images as jpeg not gif? and if i want a transparent background for my image, ill save it as jpeg still but mask it in flash? that sounds a good idea...

thanks you all... really appreciate your help.

I dont think progressive jpegs work in flash. Also, jpegs dont carry transparency information like gifs or pngs. If your graphics are fairly simple, I would recommend redrawing them in flash - smaller file size, much better quality, more control (over colour, scale, transparency, etc, etc).

yeah.. i know jpeg dont carry transparency... that y i dont know how to save the images that should have a transparent bg.

nope, i could not redraw them in flash, they are a bit more complicated to..

i think ill just try and mask the images that should have a transparent bg..

I'm not all that familiar with PS as I use Fireworks but I'm sure that PS can save as a PNG with transparencies.
That's the format that I always import into Flash.
Flash handles the conversion to JPEG compression when you output the SWF so there's no need to optomize the image beforehand.
You can tweak the compression settings in the library image's properties.
