Now listen heah!
So i did my first firing today -->
had to let a guy go. i guess it was sort of a layoff / firing. there were budget concerns.. but it was mainly because he rarely showed up on time and last week i missed an important deadline when he didn't show for work.
first time for everything i guess.. it was not fun tho

You can feel free to cheer yourself up by hiring me then.

Little wuss.
A lotta people here at my office that I'd love to sack. Fortunately for them, im still not at a managerial position where I can sack people. However, I wont be very far in a couple of months. I'm gonna love sacking some of these slackers then

Is "coming on time" that important for you guys?
Are your a process oriented or result oriented person? just wondering.

Coming on time isn't that important to me; unless it's for a reason: meeting, presentation... or at least put in a solid 8 hours.
But not showing up at all... I have problems with.

Getting in on time is very important to me. If you work in a team where most people work from 8-5, and you decide to get in a 11 thats 3 hours less time a team has together to interact.
Firing someone is sucks bigtime. My ex-boss hired my best friends girlfriend, who was totally unqualified for the position - after a couple of weeks I had to fire her, because he was to chicken.

I think in this case the kicker was they missed a deadline due to it.
It must be obvious day at camp stupid

What if the working environtment doesn't require that much interaction?
So I guess in this matter, Napalm, your environment is very much affected by your leader who made the decision to make it appears that much interaction is needed, right?
I on the contrary is a result oriented person. I don't care what you do (even if you don't come to my office), as long as I got the result.
And yes I pretty much try to modular all work and will eliminate unnecessary interactions.
Humans interactions are complicated stuff and best to minimalize it, I think. But of course we can't generalize that. I encourage everyone to join all those socializing event.

Oh yeah, I realized that =)
Actually my question has got nothing to do with that guys being fired.
Anyway, I always thought that it is our fault too. In that case it is Mac8myPC fault for hiring that guy in the first place. no?
I won't blame that guy for being absent, thus missing the deadline. It is my fault in the first place to put my trust on him, and to rely on him too much.
Unless it is HIS deadline (like I said, result oriented). The way I read it Mac8myPC is involved in it too, that makes it a group fault, not individual.

CV's are deceptive - unless you work with the person, you don't really know what they're capable of.

How'd you actually go about doing it Mac Man. Here's my view
Mac - "Ahh Jim can i see you in my office for a sec"
Jim - "Can you just hang on a sec, i'm using the company's Internet to download this new game"
Mac - "Jim, your fired"
Jim - *Farts*, "What? ... Yeah i'll be there in a second, geez"
Mac - *Presses intercom*, "Security"
Jim - "Its at 99%"
Security - *loads shotgun*
Mac - "Piss off"

hehe... firing someone thats not performing or has let you down constantly is great! Its like getting rid of dead wood. Letting someone go who is an asset to the company isn't much fun.
I've had to do both in my time, enjoyed some, regretted others... Its part of the life cycle of the office though, best to get your first one out of the way
-
invest in a paint gun, if you dont plan on burning paris.

I've never actually worked for anyone but I'm sure if I had I would have been fired several times over. It's much easier to get rid of people who are doing contract work for you, if it's not working out you just don't send them anymore work, and hire their friends instead

Yeah but have you ever had to fire a friend?

i've had to do it a few times. i prefer the 'exit strategy' though, which is when you can convince a slacker that they should quit and move on, avoiding the humiliation of a termination. but that's only happened 2 out of 5 times...the other 3 fought it right to the very bitter end. i hate doing it, but i am usually thrilled to have the dead wieght gone (and so is the rest of the team).
Ah, these boys is all swelled up. So this was earlier...getting set to trade. Then, woooaaah differences.

Hell yeah!
Turning up late is possibly the worst thing you can do - not just at work but in life in general.
If I'm employed to work from 8 till 5, I'm turning up at 7.30 and leaving at any time after 5.
Being late is so rude.
Does the director of your company turn up late to work? Does the Prime Minister turn up late? No way.
Seriously - the quickest way to impress people and get more work and money is ALWAYS turn up on time.
You want to lose business? Turn up late then.
I'll be there. On time.
