100 million PS2 shipped!

Sony Computer Entertainment, the game unit of Sony Corp, said global shipments of its PlayStation 2 home game machine surpassed 100 million units yesterday.

The product was launched in Japan in March 2000. Global shipments of PlayStation 2 included 40.65 million units to North America, 37.14 million to Europe and 22.22 million to Asia, including Japan, it said.

As a comparision, the PS1 needed 9 1/2 years to hit 100M (and is now at 102.5M units), the PS2 did it in 5 1/2.

The GBA is the only console/handheld that ever came close (70.04 million units shipped as of September 30th)

Oh and there are now 6200 unique games for the PS2! As a comparision, the Xbox is at ~800 (783 last month).

when you say gba do you mean the original gba, or the other models of the gba?

if you are going to include the slim ps2 into those numbers you would also need to include the other version of the gba.

The Xbox will not be produced anymore next year (MS officialy stated this a few months ago) and they would need to sell ~80 million the next year to get the same numbers as Sony, not gonna happen.

My quick calculations have estimated that there are enough PS2's to encircle the globe.

But Nintendo sold 150 million game boys and more than 500 000 000 games!
