Yeah, that looks like him. Only .3 oz, that's about right.

I followed a link off that page. From what it says, I've been waking him up too often and feeding him. Says they hybernate for up to 2 weeks at a time in winter and live "roughly 10 to 20 years".

Definately have to get a bat house this summer. I know we have them around here, you can see them at night.

I tried feeding it a couple of beetles, and some minced meat, a couple of roaches, but I couldn't find any worms, it's kinda sandy there

I called him Akheelka it's a russian name for a hedgehog I read it in a book when I was young

that's extremely cute. looks like he has a cigar in his mouth.

do you reckon he'll survive ok in the wild after a few months of not having to worry about getting his own food and not being scared of anything?

I made the mistake of mentioning the cute little geezer bat to my girlfriend (works for the humane society, and used to work with bats). Anyway she made me promise to pass along this info...

Apparently bats are carriers for rabies, even the cute teeny ones that eat from your hand (duh, grew up in the country, knew that). If you haven't been vaccinated, be careful. You can be bitten (not sure about scratches) and get infected.

    Here's the part I didn't know...

By the time you start to present symptoms of rabies (ooh look, I'm frothing at the mouth) it's too late Rabies is fatal in humans if not treated BEFORE the symptoms start to appear.

He's a cute little bundle of flying death though

I think he'll be happy to get out and fly free again. He only sees us about every third day up till now, the rest of theime, he's hybernating I guess. And now that I read that bat link, I'll probably quit wakinjg him up to feed him so often. Apparently he doesn't need it. but I really don't know, never kept one this long.

About rabies. Growing up on a farm, I know a little about it, and whan I was a kid, one of the local kids had to get the shots for it after being bitten by a dog. It turned out the dog did have rabies, but the kid was already getting the shots and survived. Rabies manifests within two weeks, and this bat is amazingly healthy, so I'm not going to worry about it. We've had him about 3 weeks now, and he's fine.

Guano? yes, he a prolific guano maker. But no more so than a pet rat or mouse, or Gerbil. He's in a 30 gallon glass aquarium, so it stays in there for easy cleanup.

heh. do they treat bats at the vet? i would think they would just direct you to some local wild animal rescue agency.

Yeah, I understand. To be honest, I've never heard of a rabies 'carrier'. Always thought that if you had it, you carried it, sure, but it also killed you in the end. So no real rabies Typhoid Mary's. Might be wrong about rabies carriers, but I feel OK.

    OK, I Google'd it. A lot of pages say bats are 'carriers' of rabies, but they mean the bat has rabies and progresses throught he disease, then dies, which is what I thought. However, there seems to have been a very few animals survive, and then 'became' carriers;

    "Atypical rabies/carrier state

Although in classical rabies animals progress straight through the clinical signs to death, there are rare reports of recovery. A carrier state has been reported in dogs in Ethiopia, and there is some evidence for this in cats also."

    http://www.provet.co.uk/infectiousdiseases/5a6c42b.htm

So really, all you cat people are in as much danger as I am. And anyone who owns an ethiopian dog.
