    cartoon fire effect

    Hi
Im new to this site but Im hoping you could help me. what is the best way to create cartoon-like fire such as these:

I heard they were hand animated but surely it would take ages to draw each frame and to make it look smooth.
    Any ideas?
    thanks

Hi welcome to Flash Kit, I would say the drawings are done by hand as well, to animate flames should n't really be that difficult, you should only need possibly 5 frames and then just loop them in a movie clip, if you plan it well you should be able to overlap them, and also scale and flip them.

heres some pages to look at, most are gifs and opened in the correct art package, you can look through them frame by frame, to get an idea of the motion

Thanks for the animations, they'll be useful to work to. Whats the best way to shade the fire to give it the more cartoon effect as opposed to a flat colour?

You could use gradients or possibly hand paint the highlights with a feathered brush.
