Its similiar to the 'euphoria' system talked about in E3 by lucas arts, but I think my ideas might be able to take it further. Think about this: no keyframed animations--program the guy to keep his own balance, and then teach him to walk and he'll run into the wall and fall realisticlly, protecting his head with his hands. shoot him in the leg and he'll have a hard time walking. put him on ice and he'll slip and fall, etc, etc... all in real time, no preprogrammed anims
I've had the exact same idea after playing Ragdoll Masters! I want to use that for martial arts games, so you can just move one point, like the hips, and then the legs and body will automatically move to keep up.

And I also want to use it for a game like Gish, except instead of a blob you control a person. Something like a game version of Move It.

I've been working on a Verlet ragdoll engine in Flash. Here is the current version. I don't know how much experience you have, but I would consider working on a project together with whoever is interested and can contribute meaningfully.

Unfortunately for whoever thinks they have done so, you can't copyright the idea of a physics-based game.

i thought you were talking about the living ragdoll idea

...how could someone copyright the idea of using dynamic objects like barrels in a game in order to solve puzzles, kill players, etc.

Exactly. You can't copyright a game idea.

So is anyone interested in actually figuring out how to do this? If anyone wants my ragdoll code to mess around with I can post it here.

I realized that it would be a little more complicated than I thought, and I don't have much free time right now, so... I'm not going to pursue it in the near future. Also, its already been done in endorphin

Good luck to you though if you decide to do it

I wish I could do something, but I've been away from a decent computer for a month now and am 1,200 miles away from my own computer.

It turns out that someone has thought of this before, and actually done it! The guy who made Lugaru is using this kind of intelligent ragdoll thing for Lugaru 2. Apparently he wrote about it last year. But we still have some time before Lugaru 2 actually comes out. Hurry!

Lucasarts are using a modified Endorphin engine for the next Indiana Jones game, there was an indepth article on GameSpot (I think) a while ago, it sounds really nice, but it wasn't all realtime, it was interpolating from the game to pre generated scenes from endorphin.

Theres a movie halfway down this page: http://kotaku.com/gaming/lucasarts/
