Getting Back into Design... Need Advice!

Hello, everyone. I'm gettilng back into design (from a 4 year absence). When I was doing graphic and web design, I was using Photoshop 7, Illustrator 10, Dreamweaver MX, and Flash MX. I recently got Adobe Creative Suite 2, and Macromedia Studio 8, so I am current on my programs. However... I really don't know where to start.

I have begun playing with the new programs, but what I really want to do is create dynamic websites that are really impressive. Also... I want to learn how to make shopping carts, databases, forums, etc. as opposed to design only.

I have been looking at job listings online, and most places want a Batchelor's degree in Computer Science. I have mine in Criminal Justice. Anyways, I guess what I'm looking for is advice. What should I learn, how and should I go about doing it? I'm looking to get a job in the industry making some decent money.

Thanks for any advice you can supply!

By the way... when I say "dynamic website," I mean something integrating both flash and html. For a reference, I would say anything done by the studio of http://www.2advanced.com

start with a pencil and paper. (seriously)

the hardest part is getting out exactly what you want to do.

I absolutely agree with Juju on that one.
Best way of getting the right/left brain balanced again. So many other bonuses to it too: you get good ideas about how your finished product will look, cuts out time in prep and planning and at the end of the day doodles and sketches are fun.

Also walk around and keep your eyes open, I hate malls and shopping but love looking at different posters, architecture, shapes, colour ect you'd be amazed where you get some of your inspiration from.

Keep us updated, I'd love to see some of the stuff you come up with.

You know... now that you mention it that's what I always used to do. I'm glad you brought up the idea, because I hadn't even thought of it :-)

There are a few sites that I have done that are still online, but they are all old. Nothing current. I don't have access to a server right now, so any portfolio work I do now is going to be offline. I have looked around at some "free hosting" sites (ie geocities) and have been completely unsatisfied. Oh well....

Well... just for kicks, here are links to a couple old sites I have done. I not proud of them - my goal is to do something better than these...

    My future goal: http://www.2advanced.com
