    Need a Free Image editor.

I need a free image editor.
What I need to do is: resize images, crop and save optimised for the web.

    All of these Photoshop does.
The problem is I need to give to someone.
And they can't afford to pay 000's for Photoshop.

    Any pointers would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

If all you need to do is what you mentioned then take a look at Irfanview.

    tried both.
    excellent progs.
irfanview - wow, how can it be sooo small?
    gimp - really powerful.

the only thing missing for me is: saving for web.

    photoshop has this.
it does 'something' magic that reduces the file size by loads without losing ANY detail for the eye.

saving as lower than 100% quality just doesn't do the trick.
    any ideas?
is there a special filter i can get or something?
    thanks.

Yeah, Irfanview is sweet. I would recommend keeping it and making it your default image viewer because it opens so fast.

And yeah, Photoshop does have some special mojo that isn't found in other programs. That's why it's on the top rung of the graphic editing ladder. You're just not going to find anything that works exactly like Photoshop that is free. There are lower-end alternatives, but that's just what they are.

I would do some searching on google. There are quite a few free programs out there and you just might find one that doesn't have all the functionality of Photoshop, but it might do a fair job of saving and optimizing images.

Here's one result from a search for 'free image editor'.

Here's an image viewer that I've been getting some good use out of lately. I haven't done much saving with it, but it's pretty full-featured for a viewer. You'll have to google it, but there is also a 'Faststone Player' for video files that works quite well.

Gimp seems to have all the basic features you need for image-editing...but the interface is very weird... I read somewhere that there is "plug-in" for Gimp that makes it look more like photoshop...cannot remember now...but surely google will help... Gimpshop... photo shop gimp.... anyone knows it by hearth?
