    Speed of XML socket servers

    Hi,

I am working on my first "real" game that I hope to actually publish for public consumption. It is a multiplayer game at heart, though right now I have an AI handling the opponents. I would like to be able to add the option of playing against other human opponents. The trick is that the game is fast-paced and moves by one player affect the other players immediately. I am wondering if a socket server is fast enough to handle something like this?

My one (using an iMac G5 as server, ElectroServer as the software, and my home's internet connection for sending data) had about 1 second of latency... I think. Not suitable for fast-paced real-time gaming, I'm afraid (although I might be very wrong about those statistics, since I didn't actually measure them, I was just estimating based on how smooth the movement was).

That's what I was afraid of. Are there any alternatives that people have used succesfully?
