SitePal - how does the head turn?
Hi,
I've been wondering, how does SitePal make it's character turn their heads?
The nose, mouth, eyes, as I observed, are only moveing... but the head ( and hair ) itself ? ... do you think this are just different frames or it was made in programming so that one side scales, while the other shrinks? What do you think?
Thanx!

I'm pretty sure its a stack of concentric shapes that just bunch up on one side or the other.

Your comment sounds that much emptier for knowing that you'd hit that given half a chance.

This is how it works:
As you can see from my image, The actual face is the only part that needs to appear "3D" To achieve this, the face is drawn and split into two pieces length-wise.
Here is a face I made, split, and then scaled:

Here's an example SWF I made to demonstrate the technique when it's all applied. The mouth, nose, and eyes / eyebrows are all one movie clip that moves along the center divide. The hair is layered behind the face half and on top. To give it extra 3D umph, the bangs are also placed on the mouth layer.

Note: In the actual Sitepal flash, the head also rotates a little when looking up / down. I'll try to put that feature in a little later. I had to comment it out for now since it was acting a little screwy.

Yes, I did. Thank you. It doesn't take that long at all. You just have to create a main containing layer (I call "face"), then inside of that, make two movie clips that each contain a face half. I call them "face_left" and "face_right." You can also create a third movie clip that contains the mouth / any frontal bangs / beard / mustache / glasses / and nose. Inside of the two face halves is the eye movie clip called "eye" and inside of that, hidden behind a masked layer of the eye background is the eyeball called "eyeball." After you have that all set up, it's pretty much just adding the code.
I'll post the FLA as soon as I finish optimizing the code.
Here's my latest example with President Bush. I wanted to try doing a photograph of a real person, and it worked quite nicely.

Genesis F5, WOW! George W is truly excellent! And a great Thank You for all the info you provided.
By the way, maybe there is a change you'd be interested in a little freelancing in that direction?

Thank you very much. It was no problem at all. I forgot how much fun it is to help people with Flash work. As soon as I can get the latest Flash and get caught up with the new implementations, I'll get back to the help forums.
I don't know about freelancing yet. I might give it a go sometime. This was my first time trying anything like this, so it still needs a little fine tuning.
Check it out now. Bush is ready for Halloween.

A code challenge would be cool.
Here's my last revision before I release my special one.

This one illustrates bangs (bandana knot) and how that looks when you do it. For being such a simple technique, it's quite effective.
