The most popular open source compiler up until now has been MTASC. With the release of the Flex 2 SDK I imagine a lot of users who were once dedicated MTASC users will migrate to Flex to get themselves familiar with AS3 while still reaping the benefit of a free compiler.
Since Flashkit aded the AS3 forum most of the Flex/AS3 related questions get moved there and is where you can stay in tune with the Flashkit userbase as it discusses and exchanges snippets for that freely available package.
