    OOP forum?

I think it would be nice to have a forum dedicated to OOP practices and techniques, either regarding AS2.0 or AS3.0.

Recently, I have picked up OOP, and like alot of people, I have learned this on my own, so I really have no idea if I'm just quite doing it right. And it seems that harder questions like things specific to an OOP technique or problem are swept away in any of the forums. The Actionscript forum is filled with basic question and problems. The only forum that can really handle the harder questions and actually get them answered are the AS3.0 board, but thats specific to AS3.0, not AS2.0.

I just think it would be a nice idea to have a separate forum dedicated to proper OOP practices, methods, techniques, advantages, and optimizations of both AS2.0 and AS3.0 programming.

Thank you for taking the time to read my opinion,
    Matt Robenolt

Thanks Matt, lets see if we can get some additional feedback on this. At the least, we may be able to dedicate a sticky in one of the existing forums to OOP.

Thank you, that would be awesome to have a forum specifically for the issue. I know I would be spending a lot of time there!

I have to 100% agree. Ive also started using OOP a lot lately and cause of this reason im drawn to ultrashock cause theres no dedicated forum here. Now cause I land up at ultrashock I just post all questions there even if they arent OOP although I prefer flashkit simply cause I dont have time to waste posting on different sites.

Im gonna try post here now but im almost sure my post will dissapear into the basic abyss....

I personally think it is overkill to have a separate forum for OOP procedures. The only questions that should fall into there would be design patterns, inheritance, and scope issues which could fall into the actionscript forums.

have you ever really tried to use the actionscript forum for stuff like that?

for basic questions that lot of people can answer, its ok, i frequently visit that just to help someone out for something little and quick. hard questions just get swarmed away in the flow within a few hours because most of the people that visit it dont know them.

i think having the separate forum for it would eliminate that from happening and keep the more well-developed coders around.

we have other forums that dont get swarms of traffic, like the math & physics forum. but the good thing about it, if you ask a question, itll get answered. it might take a bit, but itll get answered eventually. but i think OOP is a hotter topic than complex math and physics.

yep, and im not putting down the forum..its what its there for. newbies immediately go to the actionscript forum, post, and get answers like they want, but anything more complex rarely even gets seen.

i think even if OOP Programming was the name or something, it would completely deter newbies and keep the people who know what its about or want to learn OOP programming and practices.

I don't know, can we have subforums? I quite like the way sitepoint have setup their PHP forum. You have the general PHP forum and then within that a more specialised subforum for PHP Application Design. Could a subforum like this work in ActionScript?

I like the idea and could see myself spending some time there. Classes and OOP apply to the creation of Components in AS 2.0 and with a little bit of planning and using the linkage attribute for library items to specify classes for movie clips, you can really make some nifty little clips.

Also, from what I have seen on the board here, a lot of our members don't do just flash programming. OOP can be applied to a variety of languages I have used ASP, PHP, and even JavaScript classes. All of which have uses related to Flash.

Additionally, with ExternalInterface you can actually get flash to communicate with many of the .NET languages (I am playing with C#). So call backs and event handlers become important when doing this.

I can see a whole bunch of uses for a dedicated forum or topic for OOP.

yes, true kortex. just a general OOP forum would be perfect because alot of the techniques apply to all languages. i want a place where i can go and ask, "what does a 'static' attribute on a variable mean?" or something like that and it actually get answered. and thats not even a complex OOP question, but i guarantee it would never get answered anywhere else.

Allentown? I'm 15 minutes west of Allentown. Howdy neighbor!
The thing about mods is, the only way to become a mod is to be recommended by an existing moderator. Its a respect and custom thing dating back to the days of the Vikings I think. But we will be discussing this in the Team Room for sure.

I know that i'm not a mod but I think that MyFriendIsATaco would be a great moderator to think about for this forum. I've seen him help throughout the forums. This was his idea and he seems to be at least somewhat knowledgeable on the topic. I know I can't officially nominate him but now you have some things to think about.

I'm not that hard to imitate. Just make some random negative claim at Apple or anything else for that matter and then have nothing to back it up.

Howdy back at you. To be honest, I have no idea how the moderator thing works, that's why I asked (in other words, I was not trying to suggest myself for nomination).

From what I have read of Taco's posts, I would also agree that he seems to know what he is doing.

Hope something comes of all this.

Another good argument for an OOP forum Kirupa has this:
    kirupaForum > Development > Programming (C#, Java, C, C++, etc.)

Don't get too excited. Personally I like Taco, but we generally mod people who are capable of answering questions, not the people who are interested in asking them.

We also frown on taunting other members by turning their names into feminine hygiene products...j/k

And more importantly...we need a forum for them to mod first, and at this point an OOP forum is a longshot. Not trying to be a jerk, but I don't want you guys to get all pumped about something that's probably not going to happen right now.
