    First Battle in years

Hey guys, it has been a long, long time since I've battled here, and I am no longer employed as a designer (am now a developer), so my design skills are rusty. I'm looking to have a good, fun PS battle here in memory of the good old days. Who's willing to take me up on this one? Anyone? Anyone?

    Rules:

    - Cannot change the dimensions.
    - Image can be rotated.
    - 4 rounds.

Excellent! Sounds good to me. When do you think you'll be returning your volley? There's no rush at all, was just wondering.

Sorry for the delay but here you go. I must admit I was stumped and scraped the first Idea actually I scratched about three. In this case I feel the fourth was the charm

    Nice volley dark.

The texture and colour of the background is awesome...

My only criticism on your work is nothing to do with your PS skills but your choice of typography, if you took a little longer on font choice and layout, I think your images would benefit greatly.

Started not to use any font but here is the thing there is a hidden pic in the imag HINT on the right side of the image. Now how does one choose your lettering for an image? Ontop of the fact that xp will not let me up load any text that I downlad from the free font sites. Thank You for the crits

thedakrness xp will let you add your own fonts, you just need to download the font, and then save the font file in your fonts folder.

your fonts folder is in the 'control panel' in xp. Save your font to a specific place on your harddrive, then open up the font folder in the CP and then 'add fonts', find your downloaded fonts and it will install them for you. Make sure you restart photoshop after you're done.

Trial on error is how i used to choose fonts, sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn't.

Nowadays I have a library of over 2,000 installed on my mac 3,500 on the PC (more archived that i rarely use on a backup drive) and often spend as much time reviewing fonts prior to creating my image then actually creating the image itself. (I use Font Explorer to browse fonts and preview) I usually have a good idea of the image I want to create, the font choice just then adds more definition to the creation of the final piece.
I go on the premise that the font choice have to compliment the message being delivered by the image, pointless putting a weedy pathetic skinny font on an image that screams at you and visa-versa a strong bold font on a subtle image just over powers the art work.

Other stuff to consider is association, some fonts a re just naturally associated with a style or a specific brand or identity which can be used to communicate a similar idea or message in your images (Coka-Cola, M from MacDonalds etc). Size of the font in relation of the image, to big it can over power, too small it just looks misplaced and an after thought. Placement on the canvas can be almost as important as the font face itself, but in the wrong place and it look awkward or plain wrong, even word placement in individual words within a sentence can be played with to create a vibe or feeling, (falling, blurring, fading, laid angled, upside down, broken etc)

In truth there more to typography then what can be said in a single post and this one has gone on long enough as it is...

if you genuinely have an interest in typography which I personally think is a major skill to have in graphic design then there is plenty of information out there in books and the internet.

I learnt a lot from some of the typography freaks in the arena, also had the privilege to have a lecturer at college when I was doing my foundation degree that specialised in graphic communication and typography so picked up a lot from him.

XP issue... don't know what's up there, on my XP machine I never had a problem just pasting font files directly into the font folder or using the default font installer. (that includes free fonts and licensed)

soz for the long post in middle of a battle...
