Holycarp. But just consider for a moment: who needs a computer this good? Pretty sure you wouldn't feel much difference between a mid-range and top-range one. Even the bottom-specced ones are about as fast as you could ever need.

    Like 640k of RAM?

Basicaly I don't need an 8 core machine right now. Thing is that I normaly use the same machine for 3 to 4 years, so it has to be fast enough to run everything that comes out till than. (my current G5 is now a few months older than three years, so it's a good time for an update as even my MacBook is now running faster than my workstation)

Still doubt that anyone would be able to justify such a purchase. Even the biggest animation studios have a budget to keep to.

33 Million different configurations? How is that even possible...

I'm waiting for NAB, I'm pretty sure they will announce new displays (37"?) there (for Aperture users). There's a reason for this price drop, I'm sure.

    37" display? That 30" is a monster.

Why would Aperture users need 37"?

I take that name if you send me one of those 8 core Macs, a 30" Cinema Display and a Sony STR-DA5200ES A/V receiver. Thank you.

Some animation studios have very BIG budgets. You have to look at it in terms of productivity too. If you cut rendering / preview time by a third, look at that exponentially in terms of the number of animators, and the number of projects you can squeeze in during the lifecycle of that hardware.

Plus, new toys keep the worker bees happy.

I would wait for NAB to see if this is just a "smoke screen" as someone else put it. There are rumors of a possible Final Cut Extreme hardware setup, along with rumors of Apple's interest in the upcoming ATI cards that put your refrigerators power consumption to shame.

    The world’s first 3.0GHz, 8-core Intel Xeon-based Mac Pro.
Is it just me or is Apple trying hard to convince people this is a machine with an 8-core CPU? It's just two separate quadcore CPUs, people. Been around for PCs for a while now.

Actually, 8-core is just easier and less confusing to say than 'dual Quad-core'.
