Some additional information on that "exclusivity deal":

MacNN reports that the 3GHz Xeon (Clovertown) processor that was introduced in the 8-core Mac Pro is a currently unannounced model.

According to comments by Intel's Bill Kircos: "We are indeed shipping a 3.0GHz Xeon version [and] expect to see faster gigahertz speeds for our high-end [Core 2] Extreme PCs very soon, too. For now, the product is in limited production and Apple has chosen to adopt it. We will introduce another 3.0GHz Xeon SKU later on as well."

Indeed, it appears Apple had waited for the 3GHz Quad-Core Xeon to become available before launching the 8-Core Mac Pro.

While rumors of an 8-core Mac Pro began back in October, the available chips at that time maxed out at 2.66Ghz. Only in March was it revealed by Intel that a 3GHz version would be coming "later this year".

It appears Apple is the first to use the as-yet unannounced 3GHz Xeon (Clovertown) chips.

    It just hit me.

Apple finally hit the 3ghz mark... the one they announced years ago during their PowerPC days.

    Continue on...

Finally? The 3GHz dual core xeon Mac Pro is out for a long time now, almost a year. The only new thing now is the quad core CPU.

The Mac Pro came out with the following CPU configurations: 2.0GHz, 2.6GHz and 3GHz! (all with two cpu's, each with two cores)

I was referring to the Intel switch away from the PowerPC/IBM chips.

IBM never supplied a 3ghz PowerPC chipset.

True, but you're a bit late with that "finally", don't you think?

Just realize that they promised and didn't deliver until some time later. Much like my realization.

Some realizations come later than others.

This is great and all, but I want a headless mid-range Mac.

bah. I'm holding out for Apple to bring back the clones... like the Power Computing days.

Let them handle the mid-range. Apple doesn't see any value in that sector. It's either Mac Mini or Mac Pro. SuX0rs.

You really think they'll try that again? It was a disaster. They should bring back the Cube.

Oh please no. The only Mac I owned that ever made real problems was that **** clone I once got (from Umax).

I'd not consider it a disaster as much as it was just unruly. Quality assurance was... ok. It just didn't exist. At all.

Right conditions exist now. Jobs would force certification, like the "Certified for iPod" certification and then let them go into that sector... come out with a cheaper or superior product in that same sector once the need/want/demand is sufficient.

I don't want the same exact days as it was. My Power Computing experience was less than good. I just want the licensing model to return with proper control. Allow Dell to make Apple OS machines.

Luxology got their 8 core machine. Their rendering benchmark:

    http://forums.luxology.com/discussio....aspx?id=16180

    1) Apple wanted to test using only stock content so anyone could verify their results. In practice, we've seen up to 1.94x speedups over my Quad 3.0 MacPro. So we can achieve, for all intents and purposes, linear speedup on these machines.

    2) And I can't emphasize this enough - it is SILENT. Rendering with all 8 cores pegged (note CPU meter in lower left), it doesn't make a peep.
Silent? I didn't expect that. Ok, one 8 core Mac Pro more sold! Just waiting for NAB to see if I can get a new display with it.
