    Colin McRae DiRT style menus?

has anyone seen anything like this done in flash 8?

    http://uk.media.xbox360.ign.com/medi...d_1993340.html

obviously it woudn't be as smooth, but i reckon flash could come close using some bitmap effects?

Sorry... didn't realize that was a game at first... You would have to be pretty bad ass to do 3d like that in flash... and there is no way it would look as good.

ok i didnt mean so much the 3D zooms between menus... just the initial zoom on, the distance transformation, and the slight blurring...

all effect that are possible within flash

and i wasn't suggesting it would come close to that quality but some of the effects are still possible

for an example of using effects on a realtime menu system check out the "periodic table" portfolio here.. it's a nice touch

yes. i see what you are saying.

the effect you point to at wddg doesn't look to hard to do... simple mask with either a gradient fill or some sort of blur/feathering + an outer glow applied when there is a rollover... the grain looks to be an alpha video brought in from AE or similar... the blur on the whole piece may have been applied before importing in to flash

have you seen the menu at http://www.mutualresponse.com/res/6th/ ... very simple design wise, but a neat little effect

no i hadnt seen that. thanks.

when i was talking about the DiRT menus i was referring to eg the more simplistic straight planar sliding movement*, so i don't think it would have to be particularly complex (for an able coder!). It's just the application of effects etc that give it depth and the fact that the menus are displayed at an angle rather than just a flat straight on view that make it a bit more interesting. I wasn't suggesting it would come close to 360 graphics, but I was just interested to see how much of that flash 8/9 could do without chugging

    (* eg 00:10-00:12 in this movie http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fGNvRcS9A7w )

thanks i'd seen that.. now add some extra layers and a scrolling background with blur.....

also here's one done with papervision: http://theflashblog.com/twitter.html

rotating it on an axis would presumably therefore be simple enough
