    Sonic - Flash Version Test

I started making a Flash version of Sonic while I was on work experience. I signed a form that stated that all work I did whilst I was at the company remained sole property of the company, so tonight, I started the project from scratch.

Instead of re-doing what I did down to the last detail, I wrote a tile engine with fully working hit detection on any object I place in a movie clip.

Now, theres some bugs in this test version I'm about to link you to, namely, some of them are:
The jumping animation is buggy, and only works if you hold a direction and then release it, and even then, the animation only runs for the amount of time you held the button in for.
Sometimes Sonic turns into a little blob. This was the test character whilst I was setting up the engine.
You fall off the edge, and then have to refresh the page.

Notice, that in the top left, the counter goes up by one everytime you collect a ring, and that Sonic takes time to speed up and slow down.
Now, the game isn't at full speed yet, so dont worry.

May I present to you, my Flash version of Sonic The Hedgehog.

Bear in mind, I've only been learning Actionscript since last Sunday.

    So, whattaya all think?

    Hey I think I am highscore: 8!

You started last sunday? That's not to bad for a sunday and better than stealing cars. So tell us how you started AS? Did you read the help file, some tuts or just did some pretty acurate wild guessing. Just interested because we got queston here for half of the quarter of what you show here. So fair play to ya, boy!
Hope nobody knows I am still on Flash 5

well if you push control, he turns into a character from an engine... which one?, it looks like you stole it from an engine on gotoandstop and just reskinned it, and didnt do anything to the code, which would be nice to take out the old skins. Hopefully if i read your post, you didnt take full credit for it.....

I was taught by my brother. Some of you might know him from around here. RipX?

I used the tutorial basis to get a proper look at what I should be doing, and just copied the sprite because it had the animations already put there. The rest of the engine is totally handwritten.

nice, everytime i start talking about programming to my brother he leaves the room and flips me off.

    It hurts inside.

Oh and nice start, animations are a bit weird but meh, at least you've got him jumping and landing.

The animations aren't in time atm, which is why they look off.

So whats the next step(s) of development smart boy?

We got students in placement in my company and I taugh them the basics of Flash and indeed they were doing a shooting engine or bouncing balls at the end of the day or for the next morning, so yeah I aint too surprised by the sunday bit, if you got someone to explain to you one to one and answer your questions then it's pretty easy to have quick result, thats what I like about Flash.
Hope nobody knows I am still on Flash 5

I think I'm gonna turn this engine into a Mario game, as its alot simpler than Sonic (think about the loop-de-loops n stuff.).

So, I'll post it when I have a working demo.

Yeah, unforunately I do know Rip. Must be a fast learner; took me about 3 weeks to develop my first tilebased engine (without a tutorial mind you).
