H.264 in KM

I'm working with a lot of video in Flex and while it was on my mind I wanted to mention to KM fans that you can use the new H.264 codec thats in the Moviestar Flashplayer Update (just released on Adobe Labs). If you script your content for your media players this doesn't really affect you since you can directly script your targeted videos but if you populate your media players with the IDE playlist for now you'll have to rename your .mp4 files to .flv since KM doesn't recognize .mp4 when you "browse for files. Flashplayer doesn't care what they are named...it looks inside the files and will know what they are. I imagine once this flashplayer gets penetrated (or final release) that will change and Bob will most likely allow it as a file extension (a guess) because H.264 is easier to encode, there are a ton of opensource tools to encode with and IMO the Moviestar FP9 will from here out define the standards for future FP's....this baby should penetrate fast and is already the talk of the town.

One of the Flashplayer Team members (Tinic Uro) explains the new features in a summary here:

    Thanks for the link Chris.

If you use the mediaplayer component you also have to rename the extension for now since it uses the extension to determine the file type. It will be little effort for me to modify the components source to allow the file types but I don't know what Bob wants to do since the player is still in beta.

    Wilbert

    Edit:
I can't get it to work Chris. Are you sure it also works for flash 8 swf files ?

The files I used at first to test seemed to be incompatible with the flash player update. With another file it worked fine.

Sorry...didn't see the reply in time Wilbert

Yeah, I ran a few tests and it worked fine exported as 8 in KM. I used one I had laying around that I renamed and one I captured with digital video, encoded to H.264 myself and renamed to .flv and both worked great in KM. I would have linked a few running but I hate the 15 minute post rule these days and didn't want to trap the url

Great! This is good news as h.264 rocks! You can get a free encoder here. Now I have to try it in KM.

As for the flv player in KM, it works just fine so far. I have used it a few times with no trouble.

There's an FLV player in Koolmoves?

Wow, would that ever be handy (since it's virtually impossible to find a flv to mpg converter).

Where is this flv player? Under with "Tools" ?

ok, I put a slideshow on my page... under properties for slideshow is "content" (Where I assume you would load the flv file), then "image file" and I have a choice of jpg gif png.

    ?

The slideshow component is for still images. You need the mediaplayer component (that was introduced in KM 6.0) for audio and video playback.

Sorry, should have mentioned to select mediaplayer, but since Windows has a mediaplayer too I thought it was kinda obvious.

An easy and free way to get mp4's in Koolmoves is to encode with http://biggmatt.com/winff/ . I just loaded a mp4 in the mediaplayer and it played just fine.

has the mp4 issue been updated where I don't have to rename to FLV?

I need to do a non-flash version of my website for iPhones....so it would save space if both my flash and html can access the same video files....

    so Mp4 it is...

without renaming? in the koolmoves mediaplayer?

    great.

I have been trying to do it and it doesnt work unless I rename it to flv (even though it is MP4)

how do I do it? my playlist is in xml.

I saw MP4 mentioned in the Koolmoves API for AS3, but it seems to only be for

I do not have flash media server.

is there another way just to show MP4s using the in-built Koolmoves mediaplayer?

You should be able to do it like this

You can also use the gui to add video files.
If the codec that was used to encode the mp4 file is supported by the flash player, it should work.

mp4 works if I put it in the media player using the GUI in koolmoves

but not with the setExternalXMLPlaylist method

    try it..

I have attached a small MP4 sample and the xml I used

I need to use setExternalXMLPlaylist method, not the GUI method...

Did you already get it working ?
It shouldn't make a difference. When you use the GUI, KoolMoves also creates a playlist in xml structure.

I just tried and it worked fine. Are you sure your actionscript code is fine ?

    setExternalXMLPlaylist(request:URLRequest);

As you can see it expects a URLRequest object. Maybe you used a filename instead.
