QUICK QUESTION: What is "trace" anyways?

I'm not really a noob because I can do a lot by getting around having to use things I don't how to use, but I was wondering, because "trace" is used so commonly, and I was never taught what it did, I was wondering: could someone just tell me what it does and give me an example or a link plz?

It's for debugging and it'll output a variable to the trace/output panel when you're testing the swf from within Flash CS3/Pro 8/MX 2004, etc...
For example: trace(car._x); will output the x coordinate of the car movieclip.
