Scary Lizard
Came across this during an early morning walk in the desert the other weekend. I almost stepped on it because it blended in so well. It looks like a decendant from long ago.

I really had to look at it some seconds to see the lizard...how cool!!
Lucky you did not step on it!

looks like one of these.
if that is what it is, sounds like it's lucky you didn't tread on it- it's defense mechanism sounds scary!

Thanks for the input. You are right Carly, it does look the same. I do not think I want to find out if the eye squirting thing is the same though....
Frex- it was laying in the recessed area just to the left, when I got too close it moved and that is when I saw it. One more step and who knows what would have happened????

No thanks for having that stuff live near me.

yeah yeah yeah
Looks like a horny toad to me. They are pretty common in Texas as well as the southwest. Usually pretty harmless, but that blood squirting thing is gross...
Nice pic!
Sigs R4 Suckers! Wait... I mean.... nevermind...

Come on WannaBe, it is not pet material for you....
It did catch me by surprise when I came up on it and saw it move out of the corner of my eye. At first I thought it was a Gila Monster, which is one thing you DO NOT want to mess with out here. But then realized it was not. But it still did look mean.
I agree Sandy that it is a Horny Toad, but was not willng to reach lout and pet it
