[PS CS3] How do I stop and adjustment layer effecting other layers

OK, I have layers 1 2 and 3, I need to add an adjustment layer to layer2, the middle one. The adjustment layer effects layer 3 as well when I only want it to effect layer 2.
Without re-arranging the layer's order, how do I get the adjustment layer to only effect the layer below it?

Have you tried putting it in a folder, and adding the adjustment layer within the folder. Let us know how you get on

Mask the adjustment layer so that it only affects what's on Layer 2.

yes, that's what he's wanting, but i dont' think he's aware of that function in PS layers pallette.

So here's what you do (all within the layers pallette)...move your adjustment layer above the layer you want affected. Hit and hold 'alt' on your keyboard, move your mouse over the little line that separates your layers, you'll see your cursor change to 2 circles and an arrow. left click when your cursor changes and you're set

hope that helps...and hope it works, i wrote this blind without PS in front of me.

    Wow it WORKED!

Thanks lefteyewilly, this will save me a lot of time and effort.

Call me unexperienced with PS but I've never seen the "2 circles and an arrow" cursor before. Does it do anything else ? I mean is this method used for anything else?

i use it all the time. It's a god-send that i didn't figure out for a long time.

You can use it for many techniques, but the only function it does is effect the layer right below it.Play around with it a bunch and i guarantee your work (and workflow) will improve.

it's most effective on adding textures/effects on masked out objects and shapes.
