I'd love to know how to recreate something similar to the following text effect:

you mean the blown away effect? may be pure code or perhaps using a 3rd party app like swish max, here's a link to swish demo:

(the demo looks really dated, but there's some really nice text effects once you actually use the program, they're obviously better programmers than designers lol)
