    Market crash !

Hong Kong's Hang Seng index fell 8 percent in early afternoon trading Tuesday as global markets tumbled on fears that a U.S. economic slowdown will lead to a global recession.
Tokyo investors are worried about how a possible U.S. recession could hurt exporters' profits.
Japan's Nikkei index plunged below 13,000 for the first time in more than two years, down 4.5% in afternoon trading.
South Korea's Korea Composite Stock Price Index fell 90.03 points, or 5.4 percent, to 1,592.63.
Australia's benchmark S&P index was down 6 percent.
The Singapore stock exchange was down 4.5 percent, and Taiwan's benchmark Taiex was down 6.6%.
Trading was halted in Indian markets Tuesday as shares plunged on opening, with the benchmark index falling 9.5 percent. Shares in India's Sensex fell nearly 11 percent -- a four-month low -- on Monday.
What exactly does this mean ??? I dunno how this share market, stock thing works ?

This means I'll be working overtime tomorrow.

Incidentally, koolbabs...crash is a very strong word. Huge decline, recession, bear market...much more appropriate than crash.

A stock market crash is a sudden dramatic decline of stock prices across a significant cross-section of a stock market. Crashes are driven by panic as much as by underlying economic factors. They often follow speculative stock market bubbles.

Stock market crashes are social phenomena where external economic events combine with crowd behaviour and psychology in a positive feedback loop where selling by some market participants drives more market participants to sell. Generally speaking, crashes usually occur under the following conditions: a prolonged period of rising stock prices and excessive economic optimism, a market where P/E ratios exceed long-term averages, and extensive use of margin debt and leverage by market participants.

There is no numerically-specific definition of a crash but the term commonly applies to steep double-digit percentage losses in a stock market index over a period of several days. Crashes are often distinguished from bear markets by panic selling and abrupt, dramatic price declines. Bear markets are periods of declining stock market prices that are measured in months or years. While crashes are often associated with bear markets, they do not necessarily go hand in hand. The crash of 1987 for example did not lead to a bear market. Likewise, the Japanese Nikkei bear market of the 1990s occurred over several years without any notable crashes.

Although it seems like straight wagering, it is far more complex, with many more mitigating factors than simply the odds on a turn of a card, or even the past training, performance and going factors that combine to influence betting on horses.

Rather than 'gambling', a more appropriate word would be 'speculating'.

A subtle difference, though one worth noting.

    The simple answer would be:

What goes up must come down.

Swinging faster than a Gordon Brown economy.

I wonder how big the Zoloft would have to be to fix a whole country?

This seriously might be the best advice in this thread.

Unless you're unlucky enough to have a fund manager that invests your pension money in a company that goes bust due to the credit squeeze.

On the BBC news they said it was the fault of our friends with whom we have a 'special relationship' or Homer's people as they were refered to.
