Maybe if you doesnt shade it so strong at the shadow parts it would look better.

Yep I thought about a "random clouds" method also. That would be fun. But not as easy as it seems I guess and after designing my about 10 different clouds I realized that we don't feel too much that there are always the same clouds scrolling in the background.
But I guess one could do a fun toy alowing to convert your drawings into clouds

Great thread, I'm really glad to have found it.
After my last game, I've realized that adding texture to surfaces instead of simply using a solid color is an easy way to make a game seem more polished. The point about transitions is a good one too - I'll see if I can apply that to my next game. Funny how these little things can make such a big difference.
I liked that 2Advanced Studios site - very slick. I'll be studying it. Where do they get those little computer-y sound effects though? I hear them everywhere but I can't seem to find any to download on the web!
