Going to Romania
We're off to Romania next week for 10 days. Some friends run an orphanage in Transylvania and have renovated an old hunting lodge and offered it to us. I've pm'd a member who lives about 200km away for important information (e.g. the price and quality of wine) but I've a couple of other questions you might be able to help with.
We're taking our (acoustic) guitars - do I need to detune them for the flight? If so by how much?
Also my friend who's also coming is hoping to get a local school to donate a laptop to the orphanage - I guess it would need a Romanian keyboard but would it also need a Romanian version of Windows on it?
Anyway I hope to keep a blog while we're out there and post some pictures, I'll let you know when it's updated if anyone's interested.

Thanks for that, it makes interesting reading. I guess apart from packing the guitar in plenty of clothes it's just fingers crossed and hoping people take a bit of care.

Sorry, B, couldn't see that link. We're having a great time in your country, people are very friendly and helpful, and the wine is frighteningly cheap! You were right about being veggie, though there's a really good market here so we can cook back at the lodge. We've found a friendly bar which does excellent coffee, and the waitress speaks English so any problems in town we ask her for help. Sunday our friends are taking us for a trip into the mountains, which we're really looking forward to, and I'm also looking forward to watching the Romania v France game with the kids in the Sanctuary.

Added another post to the blog today. Most of the pics are of the children at the orphanage; they all have hepatitis and some also have HIV/Aids and we're setting up an interchange of letters and photos between them and my friend Bob's school. The students will be reading it, having written some letters for us to bring out here, so it's good they can see what life is like for them, which is better than it has been.
Plenary C, your country certainly is beautiful, and though the village is poor relative to Britain we walk down the street and everyone smiles and greets us. We have great fun miming what we want to the woman in the village shop; fortunately we knew the word for milk, that could have been interesting.
Jo, who runs the orphanage, showed me a guitar she was given and I've attached a pic of it. It appears to have a back made from Armadillo or similar. Frets, or anyone, have you heard of this? It seems like a lot of bother to go to to make an artificial one.
Tomorrow we're off early for a drive into the mountains. Hoping to see bears or wolves, but from a distance.
