    Long term goals (5 years)

    g-day

just interested in what people's (if any) long term goals are towards programming / game development. For me:

    1 primitive 3D engine
    1 basic artificial intelligence library
1 basic physics engine (rigid body polygons)
1 completely finished never need to be touched again tile based engine.
1 generic editor for level data supporting tile based, vector based and simple 3D based games.
1 completely finished personal project incorporating 3D and AI.
1 set of complex spacial data structures / trees. (BSP, Quad, Octree, KD-tree)

I must achieve at least one of these

how about you guys, anything nagging away at you saying, "make me, make me"?

Err, this would sound lame, but I'd like to have a good portfolio under my belt in the long term. The biggest problem for me is finding the spare time to cram flash in, but in 5 years time ideally i'd like to think I will have:
    - Completed 1 complex A.I. based game
    - Finish my first game (platformer)
    - Make a sequal to my first finished game
    - And made at least 3 more games out of the many ideas currently being neglected.

I've always felt the same way about making a lot of things in your list. I've been working the last 1 1/2 years on a web application that's nearing completion in the coming weeks. Next project which is another fairly large one is heavily geared towards flash closely tied with games. So I can return to my roots and hopefully have some more time to play with flash. I'll take any of the goals of yours that you have left over. Maybe (basic physics engine (rigid body polygons)), but also want to finish the socket server I started so long ago.

I still hope to make some kind of rpg-ish thing which takes days and weeks to complete. That was my wish 5 years ago too so it probably wont happen.

Waiting to see how much F10 will change Flash again and if Adobe continues to neglect Flash in favour of developing OOP language.

In terms of just code, a robust collision routine that I can just include in every project forever more.
I always seem to re-write my collision routines every game, and they never seem to get that much better.

Talking of overall project goals, aside from hopefully having done both a Paradoid and a Uridium clone by then, to have been given the chance to have a crack at every single genre.

    - Complete that darn fighting game engine I've been working off/on since Flash 5
    - Same as Mr. Malee - completely finished never need to be touched again tile based engine.
    - Create a simple, turned-based multiuser game

didn't know about that - sounds potentially very cool

the one thing I would like to achieve over everything else is some kind of game/interactive project that has a tangible atmosphere and a character you can really associate/sympathize with/care about. Not in an RPG story-arc kinda way but more like 'hunter', 'mercenary', 'half life' and particularly 'another world' + 'flashback' amongst others that stick in my mind.

imagine creating something that could generate internal wrangling similar to those few moments you have to choose whether or not to assassinate someone in GTA4. That would be an achievement higher than any award or pay-cheque!

When I started to make games, I was interested mainly by physics engines but not that much anymore. I consider them just as tools.

My challenge is more about game design. I want to make a fun and enjoyable game that is just so addictive that you can't quit for a second .

[edit]Thx for the nice topic mr malee

Gimme 1 more month and I'll be able to show you

(sorry for the suspense but I really do have a project that I hope to still be running in 5 years, that I am desperate to show y'all)

Apart from the project hinted at above, Console game development and possibly some sort of large scaleout door kind of thing (games being played projected on sides of buildings or what have you..)

Hmm 5 years is a long time...yet it is such a short time also!

Well, as far as programming / game coding etc:

Build an RTS game complete with:
    - Map / Trigger / Scenario editor
    - Pathfinding
    - Strategic / Intelligent AI

Also I'd like to create a multiplayer TD game ( my fav genre :P )

Other than those two bigger projects...one of my main CURRENT goals is to just get to the point where I can quickly create and finish games. Right now I am spending too long on my projects and I need to simplify my ideas a bit so that I can get them done in a reasonable amount of time!

    I'd like to:

-Make a multiplayer game, I've always wanted to do so. Maybe an rpg.
    -Learn as3 :P
-Finish 2 games or so that I left unfinished.
-Finish the game I'm doing right now (short term)
-Have my own flash game company :P

nice, seems like I'm not the only one who will be bald by 2013.

I would also love to learn a new language, just the basics, as I feel I will need this skill so my ass still has a $ value.

I have a creative mind that just can’t fulfil its hunger with my lack of actionscript i know at present.

So! I would like to learn cs3 and whatever new version flash brings out... Not too many changes I hope!

Plod along dreaming up new flash games, trying different techniques until i know enough about cs3.

Maybe find a mutual collaboration with a cs3 guru to create games, while i learn and do the above.

Complicated new things hurt my brain lol

Ok enough taking the piss. Nice post.

in 5 years I don't want to be programming games at all. I want to have a swathe of little programmers at my beck and call making my hair brained ideas!

but If I had to make something ....
    - intelligent car racer ai
    - multiplayer fishing game
    - virtual pet empire a cool interactive flash pokey sort of thing.

And if I had some learning goals:
    - to kidnap render and force him to teach me stuff
    - convince squize that smoking is bad for your health
    - to understand malees pinball engine!

    My future goals are to:

    -learn AS3 (im too lazy)
-make a multiplayer game ( in the makings with nonoba's api)
-convert all my projects to AS3 after learning it of course.
-play around with unity3d without using a mac.

these are kinda short term (2-3 months, except the last one)

Well these are not really 5 years, more like 1 - 2.

-Learn and make something playable in both 3D and multiplayer.
-Finish my current project and a bunch of my other game ideas.
-Learn Silverlight if it seems useful
