converting instance of symbol into a new symbol

When I convert an instance into a symbol, I have been told it becomes a new independent symbol. But when I try to place that new symbol within the old one (from which the instance came from) I get a message saying "Cannot place symbol inside itself".

Is there a way I can have an instance converted into a new symbol and be fully detached from the old symbol from which it came?

    Thanks.

Yes: break it up, (ctrl/apple + b) as many times as needed, and then it into a symbol.

Or, you could Right-Click on it (either on the Stage, or in the Library) & select "Duplicate Symbol" & give it a new name. That way, you will preserve your layers inside the Symbol, as well as code you may have in the Symbol. Breaking Apart kills layers & code.
