Will Ferrel: You're Welcome America
Anyone else catch this on HBO? I thought it was a pretty funny show. His impression was very good and he covered quite a bit of material.

Nope - I can't speak to the show, only to my perception of his (lack of) talent and ability to be original. Again...no talent hack. America loves this buffoon...I honestly don't know why. I guess that happens once in a while, we (and the French) used to like Jerry Lewis too.

The only time i like him is when he isnt trying to hard. When he is just being subtle is when he is at his best.
he was great in Elf, But has sucked in almost everything else.

I'm a huge Will Ferrel fan. Some of the funniest snl skits ever. The first time Jim Carey hosted they were golden together. Anchor Man was the funniest movie in years.
That said, I gave up on the special about an hour into it. It just wasn't funny. It's not stand-up, its a one man stage play better suited for broadway than hbo. The subject matter has been done to death on virtually every avenue of comedy so a retread (when he wasn't off on some tangent) simply did not resonate.
I won't say he wasn't talented though. He had to stay in character for an enormous amount of dialog (seemingly without cue cards) and sold it pretty well.

Yeah I think if I saw it live when it was playing it would have been better. I stilled enjoyed it for the most part and won't write it off as a waste of time. I was doing my usual multitasking watching it anyways so whatever.

Probably descendants of those aforementioned Jerry Lewis fans.

I'm with hanratty on this. Ferrel = not that amusing. There are a few exceptions here and there. But, even a broken clock is right twice a day.
I started to watch the Bush show tonight, coincidentally. Got about 5 minutes in and thought, "the only person that will think this is funny is George Bush." Turned it off and here I am on FK instead.

Ferrell wasn't trying too hard, playing the part as a melodrama is perfectly understandable, and even an intelligent, well placed interpretation of the character
