    85 1.8 vs 100 2.8 macro

So next week for my graduation present my mom is taking me and my girlfriend and my sister and husband out to this place in NH for a week long kayaking trip. Now obviously I am going to be taking my camera(wish I sent in my Tamron to be serviced last month...) but I am thinking of asking for a rental for my birthday now should I get the 85 1.8 or the 100 2.8 macro?

I really want to try out the macro because it can get super close shots and 100mm at 2.8 has pretty good DOF for portraits. But I've also been drooling for the 85 for a long time now...damn it.

I wish I had more photo friends so we could just swap lenses to try out.

Sounds like a week full of adventure!
I could send you my 105 Sigma but for the shipping fee you could easily buy a new one of your own...and it would take 4 weeks to reach you...so fat chance!
Looking forward to see some shots!

I just went into central London to get an 85 and I couldn't find one anywhere - seems like it's a relly hard lens to get hold of.

I will get a macro eventually but only when I've got a decent selection of other lenses - a macro seems fairly specialised to me - pretty cool but not that flexible.

I would go for the 85 - if you can get your hands on one!

If you're not really keen on macro get the 85 and extension tubes. Personally I think I've probably used the 100mm macro more than any other lens and I love it.

So I got approved for my early birthday present.

85 1.8 and a set of Kenko extension tubes are on the way. So now I get the 85 AND some macro capabilities. I got them for 2 weeks too. I'm spoiled

    *edit*
haha Chris I posted that at the same time as you.

So the lens already shipped! It will be in Monday by 4:30.

I got it from Lensrentals.com I wanted to use borrowlenses.com as it is a POTN member who started that but they don't carry extension tubes.

hollow tubes which sit between the lens and the camera body. They thus move the lens away from the camera, which basically means you can focus much closer (but you lose infinity focus)

    Ah ok cool.

Well - I've just picked up an 85mm 1.8 - can't wait to get home and test it out. Will try to pick up some of those tubes.

Do you buy them in a pack or is there 1 that you would reccommend to allow me take macro shots with my 85mm?

There is the 12,20,36 and each one adds a certain amount to the MFD. You can stack them all together too. So just imagine all 3 stacked on Canon's 180mm macro. We're talking close up of flies eyes haha.

OK - This lens is awesome.

These are the first shots I've done with this lens - in a v dark room - tungsten lighting. A fair bit of PS correction. They're not perfect but, for the first couple of shots, I'm pretty pleased. I'll take some more tomorrow when I have some decent light:

Remember you always get a 72 dpi resolution on a screen but only a 300 dpi print will offer a detailed photo which allows to evaluate the quality of a lens...
    ...love your cute shots!

Got it in the mail right before I headed to work. This will be the longest day of work ever. I hope these clouds break and we get some sunshine! I also wish school didn't just get out cause now I can't go on campus and ask random people to take their picture...for art and everything you know
