Can we file a class action against Apple?

If I try to use CS5 to compile to native iphone obj C code, they won't allow my app in their store on the basis of what I used to compile it? WHAT!

Apple is probably well within their rights to limit that, but either way, there's plenty in your camp already.

There are quite a few in both camps.

Personally I hope the ipad hype fizzles to the point of apple cracking.
Mac addicts will drink the apple-aid all day long.
Ipad don't need no stinking camera, Ipad don't need no stinking phone and Ipad don't need no stinking flash.

Josh sometimes I think I'm in the same boat without the oar.
Inspired instruments promised the YRG would be available last june. then july then,,,,,
About once a month they made a new promise. They set up a store and I ordered.
    they also promised...
    Firmware and sdk's
No sign of the product I paid for last january. No information on sdk' releases. Just a big rolling ball of hype

The smoke hasn't cleared over this mess yet. I'm waiting to see what's "safe" and what's not before I go all up in arms.

If that were to happen, there’s no lock-in advantage. If, say, a mobile Flash software platform — which encompassed multiple lower-level platforms, running on iPhone, Android, Windows Phone 7, and BlackBerry — were established, that app market would not give people a reason to prefer the iPhone.
    ....
And, obviously, such a meta-platform would be out of Apple’s control. Consider a world where some other company’s cross-platform toolkit proved wildly popular. Then Apple releases major new features to iPhone OS, and that other company’s toolkit is slow to adopt them. At that point, it’s the other company that controls when third-party apps can make use of these features.

Also, Adobe haven't really been trying to nice to Apple for years.

In 1996 when Apple was seemingly on the ropes, Adobe made a crucial business decision and one that is coming back to bite them in the ass. They declared that their primary development platform would be Windows; subsequently, every new application or major revision of a product was introduced for Windows first and followed months later, sometimes never at all, by a Mac version.

After Steve Jobs took over and he was charting out a new course with OS X, Apple reached out many times to Abode to introduce a native version of their suite for the new OS. Adobe never committed – standing by its prediction that OS X would never gain momentum or share and it would ride the Windows ascendancy. Adobe thought that it had the dominant hand and displayed its arrogance in public.

Plus, why would I want to use apps that have been made by 12 year olds using a cracked version of CS5, with a poor user interface and ****ty graphics. Show me one Flash app on the web that I would want to use on my phone.

Don't cry fanboy – actually think about it for more than one second. Why should Apple let Adobe do this?

http://bit.ly uses a flash button that I cannot use when I'm on the iPhone to copy the URL.

http://google.com/analytics uses Flash that does not work. Same for http://woopra.com (older version at least)
http://hulu.com - not available outside the US, but flash based.
    http://aviary.com - need I say more?

I'm going to guess that the 1996 Adobe choice came after a long-term affair with Apple was relegated to nearly nothing, second-class citizenship by Gil Amelio, who's tenure ended a year after that 1996 announcement - read: it has nothing to do with Jobs, the damage by Apple was already done.

It's starting to get down to how the plugins are integrated into web browsers and that's where the problems exist (in my eyes).

Last time I checked Ipad doesn't have a phone. ergo the question would be why would you use a flash app on your non-phone.

How do you know the apps on your phone were'nt designed by 12 yr olds?
What makes you think every flash developer is using a cracked version of the product?
If I should you a flash app you would reject it on the basis of it being flash. I don't know what you would want on your phone.

If I had a phone with the capability of viewing the web and streaming content I persionally would want it to run flash especially so I could view Hulu.

Adobe made a business decision based on market value. More people had pc's then mac's in 96. Adobe could have walked away from apple entirely but they didin't. If anything the amount of dev for apple compliancy far outways the roi. The cost of apple dev for adobe is displaced by PC pricing.

It's like the gas station that has one price for both cc and cash. The truth is the gas station takes the processing fee and has the cash users pay for it.

Is Apple merely installing a bouncer at the doors of it's clubbing venue and/or is Adobe just mad that it doesn't gets an entry into Steve Job's playground?

Feels like a bit of both really.

    My Opinion.

Let em. If apple wants to simplify the user experience by limiting availablity of products that is fully apple's perogative. They very well could find a very big dilemma when they are known as the aol of hardware.

I'm a registered apple dev (personally and through my company) and have published a number of apps written in Obj-C and am working on a game in OpenGL. While some of the apps could have benefited from CS5 (and we were very much waiting for its release so we could pass it around to more iphone devs here at work), it would also open up a ton of competition from "little kids" making bad apps with stolen copies of CS5. Even though most of the apps wouldn't get through the review process (let me say that again - most flash apps wont make it through the review process even if they allowed cs5 to compile and submit apps), it would still slow down legit submissions because the reviewers would be busy reviewing a lot more submissions.

If you haven't submitted to the iphone store, you probably don't realize that Apple is already super, super limited in what they accept. If you have a table view controller (picture the iPhone mail program), and the cell opens another view (when you click on the specific email message you want to open), it MUST have some arrow icon off to the right to indicate to the user that a new view will be opened. Failure to do so is a violation of the user interface guidelines and can (will) get your package denied. If they're so anal that they deny programs based on icon use conforming with the rest of the OS, why would you expect them to allow third party compilers to completely and totally break the consistent visual user experience?

To over simplify this with an example everyone will pretend not to get, it's like MySpace and Facebook. Sure, MySpace lets you do anything you want with your profile, but that gets really old, really fast, when you realize most of what people want to do is annoying garbage. In the end, people chose Facebook because it was clean and consistent, no annoying noise or flashing video every time you load a random page. So, too, will people eventually realize that Apple's intention is to protect users from garbage and guarantee consistency through total control.

In the end, if you don't like it, you don't sue, you buy a droid.
