    First attempt at (fake) tilt-shift

Just going through some old shots from Brazil and thought they'd work with a bit of photoshop editing with a tilt-shift effect. Would like to hear what you guys think:

In like especially the first one, really give the impression of viewing a 'toy world'...Madurodam in Netherlands

    http://www.madurodam.nl/?lang=1

The last one is good too, matching the impression the first gave me

The 2nd and 3rd showing the same situation...here I prefer the second of the two...the blurred forground of the first image of these 2 seems a bit too much

It's a nice collection giving the illusion of a mini world

Open in Photoshop - create 2 duplicate layers - apply blur to both. Then create a mask on both and apply gradient (black to white) over the mask so the blurred layer is only partly masked and fades out.

You could do it on 1 layer I think but 2 layers is fine..

I agree, #1 is the best. The last one is a close second. I think the blur in the 2nd one is too sharp and the 3rd one is too "loose."

Nice job! If you google tilt-shift photoshop, there are a bunch of tutorials out there and several go into much more detail than just doing the blur on layers (lens blur, sharpening, contrast, saturation, etc.), but I think that's very effective.

    Nice job!!

Love it - wonder if it's just as easy to create a gradient blur effect in after effects pr premier etc..

Might give the video thing a go..

Those are very nice. Using the Lens Blur filter would give more realism , looking like a real lens than Gaussian Blur, as it can mimic the unsharp highlights in a realistic way.

HDR, Tilt shift... I'm seeing an advertisement at the moment that advertises a camera as having "background blur"... so - it has a wide aperture.. Part of me cant stand snobbery in photography - why shouldn't great photos be available to everyone? But then, taking out the learning process removes you from a really important part of photography so it's a shame that a technique that took time to learn is now just a "mode" on a camera..

Still - learning to shoot in manual still makes the shots that stand out...
