    My first Android

So I picked up a HTC Desire HD from T-Mobile the other day and I immediately love the device. I am however a little lost yet on managing it well.

What are the must have apps and how do I close all running apps?

I've also found managing the apps difficult and still haven't spent the time to sort it out. But, I do like the platform regardless.

I like to keep it pretty minimal. Only must have app for me: "Remote Wave"

It allows you to play audio attachments in gmail. I use it to play voice messages from my office phone that get emailed to me.

    In alphabetical order:

    Astro (better file explorer)
Autostarts (for pay - this controls starting processes)
ROM Manager (for custom firmware and for Clockwork Mode Recovery)
    Titanium Backup (NECESSARY)
Traffic Stats (for pay - this measures what data is being used via 3G or wifi)
Uninstaller (I've found the built-in uninstall process a bit messy at times)
WatchDog (pay - this replaced Advanced Task Killer because it alerts and can shut down tasks that use too much CPU, screen on or screen off)

Mind you, I've rooted my phone, so Titanium Backup and things like ROM Manager and Root Explorer allow me to alter the OS as I need. Titanium Backup is a necessary backup app if you're going to ever want to restore your machine - accidents happen.

Awesome. Going to have to read up on those to see how they work.

Oh... and to close running apps, I'm going to assume that you're running Froyo.

At that rate, just long press the home button and you'll have the task manager there. You can quickly end tasks that way. I still don't suggest doing the Advanced Task Killer method, simply because it can take down some necessary processes and they might be slow to restart.

You can go to Settings > Applications > Manage Applications and kill running tasks there. But normally, they tend to go to sleep rather quickly.

And if you want... go with the Advanced Task Killer method - it's free and "works" - I'm just not its biggest fan despite it being installed.

I installed WatchDog though I'm not exactly sure how to use it. Something's up because I set the alarm last night and it was crying for power within about 6 hours.
How do I check which OS I'm running?

I got a galaxy s in december, too. Got tired of nokia's symbian and maemo.

    Some apps I have:
    - Vignette and/or Retro Camera: cool photo apps, let you take photos and add different effects to them.
-eBuddy for AIM, yahoo chat, msn
    - Google reader
    - Mediafly: might be a good option if you listen want podcasts
    - Extended Controls: lets you add widgets to the home page for things like turning 3g and sync on/off, change brightness, turn on/off gps. It's probably my favorite widget

I will soon be getting an Android. The dualCore LG or Motorola looks nice.
There is also this 3D phone by LG.http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/14/l...s-3d-hands-on/

On their site, there's a "best practices" setting... here's what I have mine set to:
    CPU Threshold: 30%
    CPU Polling Interval: 2 minutes
Real Time Polling Interval: 5 seconds
    Include Phone Processes: Unchecked
    Enable Flurry: Checked
    Notify Options:
    Enable Blacklist Notification
    Enable Notification
    Vibrate: Unchecked
    Ringtone: Silent
    LED Notify: Unchecked
I've added e-mail, MMS, SMS, Tweetdeck, Browser to my white list (ignore). And it's used basically as an early warning system for things that need to be shut down or have hanged - think of it as a smart process manager.

Leading back to the whole "I'm anti-Advanced Task Killer" spiel from earlier, I'd say grab it, alongside the aforesaid Watchdog settings and you could effectively use WatchDog to accurately grab what has decided to run rampant, then use ATK to kill that process with one click.

Also... start killing widgets man. I use only a clock widget, a news widget, and that's basically it - well, there's Pulse and a wifi/3G status widget I use too, but those use very little RAM and processes.

Just trying to help. And drop the audible alerts for Watchdog - they're annoying until you get your white list sorted out.

So I guess with TKS/T-Mobile having a monopoly out here there's no real push for customer service. I have to wait until 3 March for the phone guy to come out and once that is working, they'll MAIL me a modem.

Thank god I can tether with a decent speed.
