but seriously- I don't need spec advice or a budget etc. Just what brand should I keep my eye on and what ones have gone to **** the last few years? I have a Toshiba Satellite and it's been a beast of a machine and has lasted through A LOT. Is Toshiba still a brand to buy?

I have a Lenovo at work, its been ten times the machine my last one(an HP) was.
Realistically though i would never use a laptop since i have a desktop at home, Hell if i had a tablet i probably wouldnt even need a laptop i could just use the tablet as a remote device for my tower.
Picked my wife up an HP at a black friday sale last year. Still going strong but worst trackpad/soft buttons I've ever seen. Sounds cliche but I absolutely love my mbp's. Been using them in place of a desktop for years and have barely noticed. The way I looked at it, I was getting two machines for the price of one since I can dual boot in to windows or osx.
Of course I just ordered a new mac tower since I'm barely mobile.
