Grid problem to solve

I've got an assignment to create a floor plan of a big box store, where the support columns can be turned on and off by clicking "row" and "column" buttons around the outside of the floor area.

I believe a multidimensional array is the way to go but I can't seem to find a source or tutorial that will walk me through it. I've messed a bit with arrays but it's the 2D type that I can't seem to figure out, as well as a way to either duplicateMovieClip or attachMovieClip to show the support columns, which are essentially on a grid.

Any help or pointers would be appreciated!

I got a little more info on this assignment and discovered a much simpler solution than arrays once I got more detail on the problem that needs solving. so, everything's good here!
