FF, Chrome, Safari intentionally breaking Flash sites now - please jump on...

Don't know if you guys have noticed it, but recently all fluid layout Flash sites have begun breaking, as these browsers have decided to stretch a bitmap of the plugin whenever the window is resized or whenever a div holding the plugin is resized.
So if you have sites that reconfigure themselves smoothly as the window size changes, or which cause a div to tween to a taller height with external JS, these browsers are now applying a ScaleMode.STRETCH on the flash content instead of allowing Flash to redraw every frame, until any resizing "settles down" a few frames later. Similarly if you resize a window and click over to a Flash tab, you'll see that flash content squished or stretched for a few ticks until it begins redrawing.

This is basically an attack on Flash and Flash designers, and intentionally breaks carefully crafted behavior on thousands of the best Flash sites, games and browser apps -- basically any site that does anything on resize or tries to control its own DOM element. I didn't realize until not long ago that this is actually being considered "intentional behavior" by Moz and Chrome now.

These are the bug reports which are being ignored by both groups... Please make some noise on these and ask for a revert! As another guy pointed out there, IE is now the only browser that is acting sanely with Flash content...

I did notice this. I suppose the rationale behind this is, again, power/cpu load savings on low-end devices or something along the lines.

someone in one of those bug reports made a good analysis of the rationale -- basically that it's marketing BS cooked up by Apple. Since Flash isn't displayed on mobile safari anyway, it doesn't make much sense as a CPU saver, and honestly it's not saving much power. What's more annoying is that they would never apply this to javascript or canvas, which is also an embedded form of content like an object tag under the w3 spec. And certainly if they wanted to black out the whole screen when you resize the window that would be fine, then people would just know it was a crappy browser and wouldn't use it. But stretching the flash content makes people think there's something wrong with the website, instead of something wrong with the browser (or the way the browser is choosing to handle it -- no one thinks about that). This absolutely destroys the best flash sites.

Ironically too, like I mentioned in the bug reports, it badly breaks google street view in Chrome. I know they hate to admit there are just some things they can't do well in HTML5, and that's obviously one of them, but making your own content break in your own browser is like cutting your nose off to spite your face imho.

In regards to Apple... I've been screaming about it for way to many years to count. Believe it or not I was a mac fan before I switched ships.

With flash moving away from android I'm not surprised.

Had adobe maintained the flash player for android there may have been a chance google would have thought twice about supporting flash on chrome. All parties are trying to kill flash including adobe. I sometimes wish flash could be sold off from adobe to a company that was more interested in developing and maintaining the f

don't forget there is still air that works both on ios and android, and has more features than flash runtime had and more hardware resources available to it thanks to not running in the browsers. not like abobe pushes air forward too hard, but at least they do not abandon err open-source it like flex.
