Java fax, anyone?

Hi Everyone, I'm a newbie java programmer, and I've been wondering about the feasibility of a java fax API. Some services enable you to do it, but I wonder if you really need them, or whether you can use your own java knowledge in order to send faxes via an ADSL modem. Is it complicated? Can someone point me in the right direction?
