Does anyone know how to make those tiny dots I see in so many websites? Is it some kind of filter or fill in photoshop or Illustrator? And how do you make the straight line of dots? How do you get them so clear? Here's some example sites:

I just tried it, just zoom in and using pencil with the 1 pixel brush, place a dot on the screen then skip a pixel and put another one.

    That's it.

    you can...

... use a dot line in some programms (like Freehand), or you can paint a dot (1 pixel) in Photoshop and then >edit>define pattern, and you can fill a surface with it.

    dots

If you use freehand and use the pattern fill option and then export the epds of the line, I dont think it will convert. However if you setup your line how you want it to look, zoom out to %100 and print screen. Open up photoshop and paste it into a new window, take out the background.... etc and save as a gif. you have your sharp dots

maybe I understand you wrong, but how 'bout drawing a line in Flash (5!) and from the stroke options you choose dotted!

flash has the bad habit of over antialias everything. so if you just stroke your dots it looks unprofessionial? if you import as a gif and turn off smoothing. Bingo - Bango.

Make an image 3pixels by 3pixels

Give it a background color, and select the very center pixel and make it a contrasting color from the background

set this image as the background in a table cell on your markup
(note: this table cell should only be the height of the image ie. 3 pixels by unlimited witdth)

This will give the effect that when the cell is streched that the line is streching

You can just use text tool and type in the dot, if you don't want it antialiased save it as a bitmap and use that without smoothing.

here's what i'd suggest for a decent amount of control:

    make a new image in photoshop 2pixels X 2pixels
zoom in and place two dots diagonally from eachother
    like so
    ox
xo (x=black or o=clear, i'm sure you get the point...)

convert the image to grayscale and save it as "texture".

    open a new image
    fill layer 1 with gray
    fill layer 2 with white
select the white layer (layer 2) and choose:
    filter>render>texture fill...

select the file you just made called "texture".
to control the color better, make layer 2 an Overlay.
    ta-da!

now you can adjust the color on layer 1 to your liking.
this'll do it up, just like those examples you presented, yo.
