when everyone here is building webpages, what is the average pixel size you fit yours for. I have a larger than normal screen and was wondering what an average would be. I know it can be hard to see smaller fonts when you have a smaller screen so i would appreciate a little input. thx.

I believe 800X600 is considered the current "target" resolution.

Most designers have at least 1024X768, but last time I checked 800X600 was most used overall.

The most common screen resolution out there is 600x800. So I currently am poping a 600x800 window to display my Flash in. This does cut out users at 640x480, but so far, that translates into less than 30 hits out of 804 on my site:

    1. 800x600 337 41,92%
    2. 1024x768 285 35,45%
    3. 1152x864 47 5,85%
    4. n/a 31 3,86%
    5. 1280x1024 31 3,86%
    6. 640x480 26 3,23%
    7. 1600x1200 15 1,87%
    8. 832x624 13 1,62%
    9. 1152x870 10 1,24%
    10. 960x720 4 0,50%
    11. 2560x1024 2 0,25%
    12. 0x0 2 0,25%
    13. 560x420 1 0,12%
    Total 804 100.00%

It is a choice you make...

A good source for stats on this and other specs is from http://www.thecounter.com/stats/. Monthly stats usually are based on over 500,000,000 hits worldwide.

A possibility consists in creating different versions of your site, one default for 800x600 users and a couple more for people with higher specs. I've seen that b4 in a couple of sites, but I am sure it takes a looong time to do stg like that.

BTW, you can redirect the surfer with Javascript to the different sections. Don't ask me how, but I am sure you could find the code in any JS resources site.

    Regards,

im sorry to say that you are all wrong, the screen resolution depoends upon the audience, a site for graphic esigners, most popular resolution would be 1024*768 or hgher whereas a site such as a search engine will have to cater for everyone!

    Hi...

Where I work we design everything based around an 800x600 target resolution...although, once you figure in scrollbars and other browser chrome, that leaves a "safe" window size of around 770x460...

    Cheers,

    K.
