separate swf files (not loaded into same movie).. can they talk?

I'm wondering if, for example, swfs loaded into separate frames of a single html page can talk to each other-

as in you roll out of one and into another, the "into" swf opens but also tells the "out" swf to close... or you activate something in one movie and something happens in another movie, etc. etc.

hope that makes sense.. it must have something to do with communicating with the html document, but how???? ugh

I spent an hour looking around and can't find anything on this... :P
if anyone can point me in the right direction it would be good enough (of course, if you know then please don't hesitate to tell me!! )
