    [disc] pimping!

Oh yes, you heard me right... were going to talk about the fine art of pimping

Im now involved in a game project that im very excited about and for the first time deserves a bit of hardcore pimping and i was wondering about the tactics of some of you FK'ers...

When is a good time to start pimping a game?
How much information do you give away?
    What about screenshots and demos?
Do you find it even helps at all?!

if it helps depends on what you want to achieve really,i mean what´s your aims for this game? do you want to license it to a game portal, release it for free on your private site or do you have other plans for it? Depending on that the propper way for pimping differs a lot.
    anyway,better ask squize
    j/k (or not )
anyway mate,to get to your thingy, was checking your blog from time to time, looking nice so far, curious to see the thingy in action (so obviously you´re not doing all wrong with your pimping attempts )

Well, obviously not doing too bad then!

I think at this stage its unclear as to where our game will end up, however i was after some opinions on games in general. I think having a solid fan base might really help both with the success of the game and keeping you motivated throughout the development process...

Well I am also checking the blog from time to time and waiting for it to get released. So I guess there should also be some other fans out there who would like to see it finished .

And who first started using the word pimping for non-whore related things anyway? Haha. I am actually interested in knowing. When I first came to this board I was like what?? Aren't we all talking about Flash here? Why are there pimps on this board??

Squize was probably one of the first (if not THE first) pimps on Flash Kit. He's a forum veteran, And the Official King of Pimps. Has anyone got links to some particularly good examples of pimping? I want to see how the pros do it.

Kids, you've got me all wrong!

Just 'cause I mention in passing that our game for cartoon network featuring sprite animation as drawn by our very own daydream should be live in the next couple of weeks, or that the 3rd game for the current adidas campaign is gold and will be live at the start of next month, or that Jamie Kane is recieving some really good feedback, and that to keep fully informed of these and many more exciting developments keep checking the stimunation blog, well that's not pimping, it's just making conversation.

Sorry, what was the question ?

I agree first looks are important, and every one makes a split second judgement from the screenshots, no matter what anyone says. However, we're hoping that the real-time `advanced' ( ) car physics and AI cars with different driving personalities will generate some interest... or something.

Bah, I'm bad at this. Squize, will you please publish a book: "Pimping Games: Demystified" or something? ( hehheh, sorry jobe )

Blatent pimping aside ( Sorry, it's almost like a mental template for me ), FK isn't really the greatest place to pimp.

Case in point, Crazy Balls ( For those of you not aware, it's a game, not my nick down certain clubs ).
Got pretty good feedback here, but really didn't take off. I'm quoting these figures from memory, I'm sure nGFX can correct me, but for the first couple of months the traffic was a joke, something like around 3000 hits. Something and nothing.
As soon as the shovelware sites got hold, it went mental. 300,000 hits in a week.

See pimping here is all well and good, but we're just pimping to our peers. It's more showing off than actively pushing a title. I know I've brought it up in the sN blog ( To death ), but Jamie Kane recieved very little feedback here, mainly 'cause it's peer reviewed rather than gamer reviewed.
FK doesn't work in a viral way, only if some shovelware site owners come a visiting and spread your game for you, and we all know everyone's views on that ( Don't wanna get dragged into that ).

Awards are a very nice way to gain traffic, Heart Attack picked up a nice couple of awards a couple of days after release and got just short of half a million hits in two weeks ( HA3 is the ultimate example, Ultrashock award, really anticipated and highly promoted on a really high traffic site ).
Blogs are also a nice way to spread the word and garner interest.

As to the actual pimp itself, I always switch off when people really give it the large. Just say what it does and some teaser screens, don't say it's going to redefine Flash gaming, 'cause it's not and people are always going to see you as a nob for even suggesting it.

yup. around that. one day it went up to 189,000 - causing the stats software nearly to break down when parsing the logfile ...
